Ep!K Sets His Standard With The Message That Never Got Sent

image

Legend has it that Ep!K was born into this world clapping his hands. You can take that as a testament to the Atlanta native’s willingness to create and manipulate sound today. With his most recent release, ‘The Message That Never Got Sent,’ he infuses R&B and spoken word into an alternative R&B roller coaster while introspectively exploring the dynamics of a failing relationship.

“I like concept albums,” Ep!K said. “With this specific project, I wanted to tell a specific story, so I used the genre of R&B to convey that story. But within my next projects, I'm not going to stay in R&B.”

It’s important to him to be able to take his music in whatever direction he chooses when he chooses. From songwriting and production to mixing and mastering his projects, he controls it all and the kind of music you hear from him all depends on the story he is trying to tell.

“You hear spoken word, you hear R&B, you hear alternative R&B, you hear acoustics all within about 18 minutes,” he said. “I want this to exemplify the way that I produce and the way that I make music from the ground up.”

It's evident there’s no boxing him in if he can help it. As a kid, young Ep!K was influenced by some of the greats. He would listen to the likes of Michael Jackson and Prince. It didn’t take long before aspirations to be a great artist in his own right compelled him to pursue his own path in music, boundless and transcending like the great artists he was influenced by.

“The Message That Never Got Sent” starts off with “You Are Beautiful,” an ode to the infatuation stage, and ends up on the other side of the spectrum with the title track, “The Message That Never Got Sent.” Both are spoken word songs.

”Spoken word is one of the rawest forms of expressing emotions,” Ep!K said. ”You’re basically without any filter. You're telling that person, you're telling that story. You're like this is me, this is what I'm about, this is what I’m standing for.”

In between this journey from one side of love’s spectrum to the other, songs like “Blame Me,” “Satisfied” and “Hateful Love” come together to shape a fearless display of emotions and vulnerability only a true artist can capture.

“I wanted it to be kind of a standard-setter of where I’m going to go cause I can only go up from here,” he said.
