Together with his January mixtape Linsane, both projects show the yin and yang of Six Figure Lin, stylistically contrasting one another in mood and energy. “Linsomnia is about what keeps me up at night. I never wanted to rap in a box. I instead want to go a variety of directions.”
Each album cover previews what Six Figure Lin has in store for us. “On the cover of Linsane, I’m in the asylum with the devil. Like, life is crazy, but I’m happy. On the cover of Linsomnia, everything looks well. I’m at the table, but I’m unhappy. It’s like a ‘grass is greener’ type of concept,” says Six Figure Lin.
Linsomnia and Linsane were originally one project, but stylistic distinctions emerged during writing and recording. Because rapping is like a diary for Six Figure Lin, it captures the life of his day-to-day, including the bright and the dark.
“My main influence is that I like melodies.” Originating from Jamaica, Six Figure Lin grew up listening to Bob Marley. Later in life he found his favorite artist, Jay-Z, and developed a sound driven by melody.
“You’ll hear it all on the two projects: the ups and downs, having money and being broke, glory and defeat. I don’t hide a lot. It’s like a diary.”
Recently, Six Figure Lin released the music video for “N.U.M.B.”, short for ‘Never Underestimate My Brilliance’. Talking about the visuals, Six Figure Lin said, “It was a personal thing to fully envision myself as a rapper. There are lots of familiar places, and I wanted to tell my family we made it.”
The song is centrally about redemption, using wordplay to show that he is numb to his haters and doubters. “Never underestimate my brilliance, ‘cuz at this point I came up and blew past a lot of people in a short period of time.”
Six Figure Lin hopes that he can inspire others to follow their own path. “I rap because I love to, not to promote stupidity. You know, chase your dreams, not the dreams of others.”
On Feb. 1, as a surprise drop, Six Figure Lin will be releasing the music video for “Jezebel” alongside the preorder for Linsomnia.
Thirteen days later, Linsomnia will be releasing on Feb. 14, available on all major streaming platforms.
