Exclusive Interview with Zulcan
Zulcan: I never really sought out to become a music producer, I remember sometimes when I was bored at school I used to play with different features on garageband and make some short snippets of ideas but I never really thought of it as something I would pursue. Eventually, I started doing it more and more and liked it enough to the point where it became a hobby of mine to make these short clips. I started uploading them to youtube and they got some traction so this just felt like the next logical step for me.
Zulcan: My creative process is quite individual for each song, sometimes I'll have an idea of what I want, other times I won't. Either way, I don't think the way I come up with a song really makes it better or worse, because sometimes I'll have a really vivid idea for a song in my head and when I go and make it, I end up not actually enjoying it so much. Other times I'll just open a new project and somehow come up with a million ideas while just playing around and making my best song yet.
SXSW Pop: What kind of music do you primarily create, and how would you categorize your unique sound or style?
Zulcan: I would say most of my music is definitely electronic or dance centric with the exception of a few songs. That being said, all of my songs definitely have dance influences. The music I'm making right now is closer to drum and bass or uk garage with some other outside influences.
SXSW Pop: Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they impacted your own artistic development?
Zulcan: Kanye West and Fred Again.. are most likely my biggest musical influences I would say. Mostly because they aren't really tied down to a specific style and experiment with new ideas and sonics with every new release
SXSW Pop: Tell us about your journey in the music industry so far – any challenges you've faced and how you overcame them.
Zulcan: Getting recognized is definitely a big challenge for anybody coming up in the music industry.
SXSW Pop: How do you balance your personal life with your music career, and how do you maintain your mental and emotional well-being?
Zulcan: I don't really have to balance anything since I really like making music. I was making beats on my school computer long before I thought I would ever release anything. So I definitely think that makes things a lot easier, just enjoying what I'm making.
SXSW Pop: How do you stay current with music trends and ensure your music remains relevant in today's competitive industry?
Zulcan: There are always trends and popular sonics out there, but they will eventually all fade, I still am looking for the sound that I personally resonate most with so thats what I'm making now.
SXSW Pop: What role does collaboration play in your artistic growth, and have you collaborated with any other artists or producers?
Zulcan: I am looking to collaborate with a few underground rappers for a few upcoming projects. I can't give anything away yet but it's looking like a very promising project.
SXSW Pop: Can you share any upcoming projects or releases that fans can look forward to?
Zulcan: I will most likely release something in mid-late may. It won't be my EP but another single that I am currently working on right now.
Zulcan: I want to make it big, I want my name to be out there, I want my music to be heard, I want my face plastered on billboards. I have big dreams, and I'm willing to do what it takes to make them into a reality.
Zulcan: I don't really think about the audience all too much when making music, maybe as my career grows that will change, but as of now the music I make is made because I enjoy it.
Zulcan: I don't have a message that I would like to give. I want everyone to take away their own thoughts and opinions on my music without me saying what I want them to think.
