The guitarist hasn't dropped an LP of original material since 2010's Thank You Mr. Churchill.
Peter Frampton is preparing to begin a new chapter in his career, revealing on Tuesday (March 17) that he plans to release his first collection of original songs in 16 years this coming May.
The album, titled Carry the Light, is scheduled for release on May 15 and includes several well known guest artists. To coincide with the announcement, he also released the lead single “Buried Treasure,” a track dedicated to the late Tom Petty.
Sharing the news on Instagram, the legendary guitarist told fans, “This record is a very special one for me. I got to write and produce it with my son Julian, as well as work with some wonderful friends along the way.’
The album features a number of notable collaborators including Sheryl Crow, who joins Frampton vocally on “Breaking the Mold,” and H.E.R., who contributes guitar work on the track “Islamorada.” Tom Morello also makes an appearance on a song called “Lions at the Gate,” which has been described as a protest themed track.
Additional contributors include Graham Nash on “I’m Sorry Elle,” Benmont Tench on “Buried Treasure,” and saxophone player Bill Evans, who appears on both “Can You Take Me There” and “Tinderbox.”
Frampton’s previous studio album Thank You Mr. Churchill was released in 2010 and reached the Billboard 200. Across his career he has placed 14 projects on that chart. His best known release remains the 1976 live album Frampton Comes Alive! which held the No. 1 position for ten weeks.
This upcoming release will also be his first major project since his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2024. He also attended the ceremony the year before, where he performed with 2023 inductee Crow during her set. That same evening also featured Morello accepting an honor on behalf of Rage Against the Machine.
“[Sheryl] stirred the pot big-time and made people aware including some of the board members, I think,” Frampton told Billboard in 2024 while discussing Crow’s role in helping bring attention to his Rock Hall nomination. “They thought I was already in.”
