Sprints Address A Generation Stuck In ‘Wait Mode’ On ‘Trickle Down’

The single follows up the Dublin rockers' cover of Le Tigre's 'Deceptacon'

Sprints have tapped into what they describe as “the frustration of a generation stuck in ‘wait mode’ while everything burns” on their new single ‘Trickle Down’. You can listen to the track below.

The song arrives after the band released their cover of Le Tigre’s ‘Deceptacon’, which marked their first new music since their second album ‘All That Is Over’.

Set against a dark, buzzing guitar riff, vocalist Karla Chubb takes aim at the idea of trickle down economics. “Has anyone tried to explain trickle down economics to you in a bar?/I’m just waiting, my whole life is waiting/I’m just waiting for pay but losing cents on inflation,” she sings. At one point, Chubb even references Amyl and the Sniffers singer Amy Taylor with the line “I think I wanna give up, I wanna be Amy Taylor.”

Later in the track, she shifts the focus toward the current political climate. “They’re calling it free speech, it’s free hate, racism disguised as nationalism/A home that’s a tax haven, house crisis, humanity crisis.”

“Trickle Down is about watching systems fail in slow motion, housing crisis, rising costs, culture wars, climate collapse, and being told to stay patient,” the band said in a press statement. “It’s the frustration of a generation stuck in ‘wait mode’ while everything burns.”

NME awarded ‘All That Is Over’ three stars, noting that while the album showed promising experimentation and attempts to expand their sound, “its weakness tends to be exposed on tracks that are more indebted to the Sprints formula.

“Two driving and heavy tracks, ‘Descartes’ and ‘Need’, come one after another on the first side of the album. On these, the tumbling drums and piercing guitars feel held back by the more measured songwriting, and one may find themself longing for the pure, visceral, incendiary blasts that Sprints have previously done so well.”

Sprints are currently travelling across Europe on tour through mid April. Their next UK appearance will take place at Bearded Theory in Derby’s Catton Park at the end of May. They are also set to headline the first ever Bulletproof Festival in London this June, and the Dublin band will appear at this year’s 2000trees festival as well.
