Chance the Rapper captures his journey back with “STAR LINE” through the genre-blending single “Space & Time.”
Many in the hip-hop world have written off Chance the Rapper ever since the Chicago artist stumbled with his debut, The Big Day. It was difficult to argue with the critics, mainly as he stayed quiet for so long between projects. But with STAR LINE, Chance delivers an actual return to form, reminding everyone why he was once celebrated as one of the genre’s most innovative voices.
Track eight, “Space & Time,” blends hip-hop with Afrobeats as Chance looks back on the struggles that shaped his comeback. He sketches the picture in raw detail, rapping, "On my face are battle scars that surely scare a child / I've been gone awhile, and I'm not so proud / If there's still some space for me / I was hoping I could fit."
The song also addresses his divorce from his wife of five years, Kirsten Corley, and the difficulties of raising children after separation. In one verse, he reflects on co-parenting: “You said ‘It’s too late for that / But you should see how big she is.’” He later spoke more about the track during his interview with CBS Mornings.
“I think it’s a very personal song about, you know, what we were just talking about, navigating that relationship with the mother of my children,” he explained.
Ultimately, “Space & Time” is layered with meaning and showcases that Chance has not lost his creative spark. It’s emotional, it’s uplifting, and it carries a cinematic quality, with orchestral swells that make the track feel as moving as it is powerful.

Quotable Lyrics:
I grew tall overnight, I woke up one day a man
Walked back by the crib
Where we would one day raise a fam
I'd been around the world
Done all the things I can
I'm a giant now, I can't wait 'til you see how big I am
