For independent artist Jacob Devin, music begins with experience. The relationships that leave a lasting impression, the friendships that change over time, and the moments that are difficult to explain all become part of his songwriting. On his debut album, Fantasy, Devin brings those experiences together in a nine-track collection that offers listeners a closer look at who he is, both as an artist and as a person.

Built around the complicated emotions of loving someone you may not be meant to be with, Fantasy explores the space between affection and acceptance. Its songs draw from Devin’s real-life experiences, including past relationships and friendships, creating a project that feels personal without losing sight of the universal emotions that connect listeners to music.

The album took approximately a year to assemble, with Devin and his collaborators carefully refining the tracklist to serve the larger story. What began as a collection of 15 songs was narrowed to nine, with some tracks removed because they did not fit the album’s central theme. For Devin, the decision was about more than selecting his favorite songs. Every track needed to feel like it belonged.

“It's like me explaining who I am, the things I've experienced, and all that stuff,” Devin explained when discussing the album’s purpose.

That sense of intention extends to his approach in the studio. Devin prefers to be involved in the creative process from the beginning, weighing in on instrumentation, vocal arrangements, and the overall sound of each track. His collaborators have come to recognize him as a hands-on artist who knows what he wants to communicate through his music.

Although he typically builds songs from the ground up, Fantasy also challenged him to work differently. Tracks including “Highway” and “Night” arrived with their instrumentals already completed, requiring him to find his place within an established musical arrangement. The experience pushed him beyond familiar territory, particularly vocally, while allowing him to explore sounds he had not previously attempted.

“Night,” one of the final songs recorded for the album, became an unexpected favorite. Devin initially envisioned a heroic, almost cinematic feeling for the track but had to discover how that idea would translate into the finished song. Meanwhile, “Midnight,” a track he originally produced when he was around 18 or 19, found a place on the album after his producer revisited and refined its arrangement.

The result is a project shaped by both growth and discovery. Devin’s commitment to authenticity meant evaluating not only whether a song sounded good, but whether it genuinely reflected his experiences and suited his voice. With a comfortable vocal range that leans toward baritone, he also had to push himself on songs such as “Night” and “Runner,” the latter taking him into a more demanding vocal style.

For Devin, that willingness to be vulnerable is central to his identity as an artist. He began pursuing music in his late teens before stepping away for a period to focus on personal growth, including deepening his relationship with God. After returning to music, he continued developing his sound and learning what he wanted his artistry to represent.

The experiences that informed Fantasy were not always easy. Following the end of a difficult relationship, Devin returned to the studio and found himself writing from a different perspective. The distance allowed him to reflect on an experience he had struggled to understand while living through it. What emerged was music that acknowledged the complicated reality of caring about someone while recognizing that a relationship might not be right.

That emotional honesty also extends beyond romantic relationships. “Shadow Love,” for example, draws inspiration from an old friendship, while “Highway” grew out of the experience of taking a drive with a friend. Rather than inventing stories to fit a particular sound, Devin uses music to make sense of moments that have stayed with him.

He sees songwriting as a form of storytelling and personal release, with the hope that listeners will find something of their own experiences in his work. Fame, he explained, is not his primary motivation. He would rather build a genuine connection with an audience than sacrifice his creative identity to meet outside expectations.

Looking ahead, Devin is already working on his next album, which he hopes to release before the end of 2027. He describes the forthcoming project as more personal and emotionally inward, with a romantic sensibility that continues exploring the complexities of love. He also hopes to experiment with more dance-pop and techno-influenced sounds in future releases.

In the meantime, Devin plans to expand his promotion of Fantasy through TikTok and other social content, giving listeners more opportunities to discover the music and the person behind it.

With Fantasy, Devin is not attempting to tell every story at once. Instead, he is opening the door to his world, one experience at a time. For an artist who values creative freedom and honest expression, that introduction is only the beginning.
