Though “Freak” stands strong as a single, it’s also a glimpse into what’s next for Prince. Releasing later this year is an EP that reflects his versatility as an artist.
There are songs meant for the dance floor and then those that capture the vibe after the party. The debut single “Freak” from independent artist Rose Prince does just that. With heavy synths, strong bass, and bold lyrics with the right balance of swagger and unfiltered introspection, the track comes off like a late-night confessional—a captivating anthem for the after-party and the moments that follow when you’re still buzzing while the world is just waking up. Officially released last October, “Freak” marks an exciting milestone for Prince, who spent a decade honing his craft before releasing his first track.
Originally from Berkeley, California, and now living in Austin, Texas, Prince grew up in a musical family, playing piano and guitar from a young age before eventually starting to write original songs. His diverse musical background provides the foundation of his unique sound, with “Freak” fusing pop, rap, and electronic elements to create a melodic, chill track.
“It’s not a dance song but an after-party song,” Prince says. “It’s that song you play when you wake up after a wild night out or when hitting the gym in the morning. It’s confident but laid-back. It’s about being in control while still getting lost in the moment.”
Duality, an idea that fascinates Prince, runs through the track, such as in the standout verse:
I’m a James Dean, Hendrix lonely soul
And babe, I don’t fear the reaper.
The lyrics are one of the defining moments of “Freak,” exuding confidence and a little recklessness and reflecting Prince’s knack for songwriting. Regarding the process, he says, “I wanted it to be calm and confident and for the lyrics to work with the beat to project that emotion.”
Produced by Nekter Gunn, “Freak” centers on the bass and the flow of lyrics, with the synths supporting where the emphasis in the words falls. “It’s meant to have a repetitive electronic synthetic sound to it—something that resonates with people in the gym or in the car where there are booming bass speakers. The beat was always meant to give you that feeling of confidence, but it’s not aggressive,” explains Prince.
Lyrically, “Freak” touches on lust and what ensues but with a raw, untamed energy. “It’s sexually explicit, but not in a bedroom-song way,” Prince says. He describes the song as more reflective of himself, the experience, people, and the world outside him.
So far, the reception to “Freak” has been overwhelmingly positive. “It’s been cool to see people discovering it on their own,” he says. “I’ve had random people reach out to tell me they love it.” Prince is already working with influencers to amplify the track’s reach while sharing his music on social media.
Though “Freak” stands strong as a single, it’s also a glimpse into what’s next for Prince. Releasing later this year is an EP that reflects his versatility as an artist. “The EP will be a mix of different sounds and emotions,” Prince says. “It’s for people with overlapping music tastes, like me.”
