Leah Dibut sings a joyful declaration of independence in pop/R&B “Thank You”

Leah has been singing and performing since she was a child and recording and releasing music for about the last three years.

Leah Dibut’s latest single, “Thank You,” is a powerful blend of pop melodies swirling around and behind Leah’s powerful voice singing a classic R&B declaration of independence.

It’s music that raises the hairs on the back of your neck.

And the story is a thank-you, but thanks in the way that a rare songbird, having escaped the cage, might thank the wire for showing her that a cage is not her destiny. It can be a freedom from a bad love or, as in Leah’s case, from a bad professional relationship.

“It’s actually the very first song that I released where I am speaking from the heart, and it’s very truthful to me. Somebody came into my life to sell me a dream in the music industry. He hurt me, and at the end of the day I just wanted to thank him instead of bash him, because it grew some tough skin on me and made me realize my worth.”

She concludes, “I just wanted to thank him for everything he put me through,” and when you hear the song you will know absolutely that she means it, because it means she is free to create music like this.

The video, on the other hand, presents the story from the bad-romance side.

“The video was very fun to create because I wanted people to bring their own perspectives to the song, because not everybody is in the music industry, and I wanted people to relate it to their own lives.”

Yeah you knocked me down when I was at my peak
And your words hurt but they didn’t cut me deep
But it’s all right, I choose my battles and I pick my fight

Thank you for making me realize
You were never gonna reach my light
I’m keepin’ my head up high
Thank you ’cuz I’m free

On Valentine’s Day, she released an acoustic “Thank You” in which her rich, sultry voice paints the lyrics bluesy and the guitar, which begins in ballad, closes with some flamenco licks. This song constitutes a musical experience all its own.

Both versions include a reading of Scripture, from Romans 8:38-39, in which Paul sings of the eternal love of God. She is the reader in the acoustic version. The pop version features a reader who has been a friend since high school.

“I wanted to incorporate God into this song because He was the one who truly got me through that moment in my life. I was having to choose between my dreams and my values, and I really wanted to keep my values on the table when I was deciding whether I wanted to work with these people or not and, well, I guess you know the answer now.”

She laughs often and joyfully when she talks about that time and her music.

Leah has been singing and performing since she was a child and recording and releasing music for about the last three years. She has been to the Sunfest in Palm Beach County, California, and was on the cover of the Braman Winter Nationwide Magazine.

Since she began her rebranding as an independent at about the time of the professional breakup of “Thank You,” six months or so ago, she has released “What Do We Have to Lose (FOLIN Remix),” “Falling for You,” “Call My Baby,” and a song for her mother, “Dear Mama,” which is possibly one of the most beautiful pop ballads ever.

For the last year, she has put more focus on performing, “one of my favorite parts of this whole thing that’s going on,” which is evident in her videos and on her TikTok.

“I love to create a performance for people and wow the crowd and get a standing ovation,” she said. “That’s what really feeds me at the end of the day.”

“That’s just going back to my roots,” she added. “That’s who I truly am. When I was 6, you didn’t catch me playing with kids. You caught me dancing in the middle of all the adults. That was me.”

She wants her music to be real, she says.

“I want to take any experience, anything that happens in my life that I know somebody else is going through and put it into a song, because I know that not everybody has the same resources or the same family. Like, for example, I have my mom right next to me. But some people are alone, and in my song I want to be the person there with them at that moment in their life. That’s really what I what to be as an artist.”

Being that person can sometimes be fun, sometimes serious. “Thank You” is both, and her final take on the song is, “Just hear it. Just feel it and stream it.”

And she laughs.
