Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and award-winning hip-hop producer Lemoyne Alexander—also known as LA—releases his latest single, “Insecurity.” Comforting yet exciting, the single speaks to every listener and invites them to unburden themselves from their own insecurities. The record is another hit from the legendary musician who has introduced the world to his own brand of hip-hop infused rock over the past decade.
Introduced to R&B at an early age by his father, Oscar “Smitty” Smith, a session drummer at Chicago’s renowned Chess Studio, Lemoyne Alexander went on to make a name for himself in his own right. Before rock came to the forefront, Lemoyne Alexander’s life and career revolved around hip hop and rap. For 20 years, Lemoyne Alexander produced for great artists including Aaliyah, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Layzie Bone, Twista, Doug E Fresh, DMX, Nick Delahoyde, and Jodeci.
Despite his success, Alexander knew it was time to move on. “The neuroticism of it was starting to become the same music all the time—repetitive. So, I decided I wanted to get back to making happy music and making it fun again,” explains Alexander of why he shifted his focus to rock. “Rap music was work, and it wasn’t fun anymore.”
In 2013, Alexander fell in love with rock music, created the alternative rock band St8 of Grace, and went on to release four albums together in the span of three years. In 2017, St8 of Grace dissolved, and Alexander took a break from performing to write. He joined Isotopia Records in 2019, releasing his debut solo album, Solitude.
After a few years of performing with Black Light Theory during the pandemic, Lemoyne Alexander made his next move. Now, with years of band collaboration behind him, Lemoyne Alexander is excited to share his solo act with audiences.
Lemoyne Alexander is a self-made artist. “I taught myself all the instruments on my own,” explains Alexander. “I never went to school. Teaching myself was a huge challenge for me.”
In addition to mastering instruments, Alexander became a sought-after producer during his hip-hop era. As a producer, he would not only make the beats, but he would also write lyrics, sing background vocals, and finalize the records. Mastering his skills as a hip-hop producer helped paved the way for his transition across genres.
“Being a producer helped me understand my production skills in rock. Now it’s the same formats but a different genre of music,” he adds. Another plot twist? He’s no longer producing other artists. Now, he’s the artist he’s producing for—and there is no more full-circle moment than that.
While the decades of grind were tough, it was all worth it for Alexander when he was inducted into the California Music Hall of Fame. “I was proud, because my dad helped me get to this point, but he wasn’t there. I had to share that moment with him after he passed.”
Despite all of his accomplishments, Lemoyne Alexander is human like the rest of us. His latest single, “Insecurity,” is a self-reflection of facing his insecurities while inviting listeners to share theirs, too. “I was inspired by personal insecurities,” he shares. “One day, I decided I wanted to actually make a song about it. Sometimes, I use my songs as my own therapy. This was one for my own personal therapy. I wasn’t sure I wanted to release it at first, but then thought it might help others besides me.”
The song is universal—everyone can understand the pain of insecurity, no matter who they are. The 2.4 million TikTok views on Alexander’s video showcases the power of resonating with your audience. In fact, many viewers were inspired to add their own videos in the TikTok “Insecurity” Challenge.
“Fans love it,” shares Lemoyne Alexander. “They’re sharing very personal moments. The purpose of me doing this is to share, not hide, the imperfections and situations in life. It makes you a better person.”
As with many of Alexander’s songs, “Insecurity” began with a guitar riff. From there, Alexander built the song around the riff, adding vocals to the track. How does Lemoyne Alexander know a song is ready? He has a reliable team of friends and his management to give feedback that he carefully considers before finalizing a song. “Sometimes, I go back and know what I have to fix and work on,” says Alexander. “I’m always open to ideas.”
Lemoyne Alexander brings this same openness to the stage, where he is a self-proclaimed high-energy performer. “I never do the same thing onstage,” he adds. “I’m always energetic from the beginning to the end of every show.” While he’s no longer a member of a band, he does have a full band supporting him at every show. “They are just as energetic as I am,” he adds. “That’s the fun part.”
Following the release of “Insecurity,” Alexander looks forward to sharing a new album with listeners in March, along with several music videos. He’s also planning a tour.
At the end of the day, Lemoyne Alexander wants listeners to know that there’s one main reason for his success, and he’s forever grateful. “I’m a true believer in God, and God has blessed me,” tells Alexander. “I thank him for the opportunity. I also thank my record company for believing in me.”
