It’s been over a decade since SUNSCREEN began creating music and evolving. The seeds for his music were planted in early high school, during which SUNSCREEN played drums for a church band and sang in the school choir. “It solidified my love and drive to create my own songs and music,” adds SUNSCREEN. Later in college, the artist continued honing his production skills and writing until the idea of SUNSCREEN came to life.

The artist SUNSCREEN was born from a love for music and the desire to spread positivity in the world. “At the core of my songs, I write this unashamed joy I want to convey,” shares the artist. “I want to focus on the pure simple joys in life without beating around the bush. There are lots of sad and heartbreaking songs out there, so I do my part to spread positivity.”

Why “SUNSCREEN” of all possible identities? “I wanted to have a singular word, something that felt like the music sounds,” he explains. “Sunscreen feels like the main ingredient for summer—when you hear that, you think about lathering it on for a good day at the beach—it’s that beach, indie-pop feel that’s perfect for summer.” Consequently, SUNSCREEN’s ever-growing fanbase can be referred to as SPF—the more of it, the greater the power over bad vibes and UVB rays.

Over the past year, we’ve seen SUNSCREEN undergo an evolution of sound. Last year’s six-track EP, SMILE, YOU’RE ON CAMERA!, highlighted the milestone of discovering and developing the sound of SUNSCREEN. “I took shots in the dark to see what would stick and ended up with this bright, shimmery, indie-pop rock sound,” adds SUNSCREEN.

Now, SUNSCREEN brings clarity and energy to his self-produced full-length album. While the previous EP was about falling in love with his now wife and reflecting on the early days of developing feelings for someone, this album expands upon love, connection, and the little things in life that bring us joy and pleasure.

The album, EAT SUNSCREEN, is fully written and produced by SUNSCREEN and evokes a kaleidoscope of feel-good sound. Of the ten tracks, two feature a surf rock vibe—“like Footloose meets The Beach Boys”—and nostalgic undertones that remind us of summer. One of these is the spotlight single “MOVE WITH ME.”

“MOVE WITH ME” came about from a play session with the guitar. While exploring new sounds, SUNSCREEN created a riff down the guitar fret that would soon become a looping backdrop to his single. Next came a drumbeat, followed by chord shapes that accentuated the sound. “I then added a line on top of the melodic guitar part to lean toward surf rock meets pure catchy pop,” adds the artist.

Relying on simple, instructive lyrics, SUNSCREEN invites listeners to dance along, much as a wedding guest would to the classic hits like “Cha Cha Slide.” Visual learners can follow along with the dance on the accompanying music video. This feel-good single is so catchy and uplifting, it speaks to all generations.

“I’ve been working on the album for a full year—I’m stoked about the finish line,” shares SUNSCREEN about the release of EAT SUNSCREEN. In addition to his single, “MOVE WITH ME,” SUNSCREEN encourages listeners to tune in to the album in its entirety—and particularly his favorite track, “LET IT OUT.”
