PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Princess Rock is looking to inspire her peers and people older than her with a collection of music that shows versatility that belies her youth.
She’s only 15 but her music reaches to the birth of hiphop in the 1980s and 1990s, with some samples taking the listener back to the 1950s.

“My style is really versatile, I like to take different things and be as creative as I can be and take things and keep my mind open to a lot of different genres and subjects,” Princess Rock told SXSW Pop in a recent interview. “When it comes to music, I have an open mind to it all.”

The up-and-coming young singer still has two years of high school left before graduation, but she’s leaving a deep impression with the singles she’s released in recent months. Her latest video of her song “Don’t Sleep,” released in November, takes the listener back to the 1950s by sampling the classic song “Mr. Sandman,” while poodle skirts and letter jackets are the fashion rage in her video of the song “Doo Wop.”

“The beat to ‘Don’t Sleep,” was given to me by my dad and usually I get the beat and start writing,” Princess Rock said. “At first I didn’t even know about the sample. I had heard of it, but I heard it on TV, I didn’t know it was from the 1950s. Once I figured that out, I felt like that would have people more engaged, the fact that it’s a sample and it’s an original, so I felt like that would keep people more engaged.”

Princess Rock said building a musical career while balancing school and all the activities and opportunities available to those her age is a real challenge, but she hopes to inspire people by pushing herself and achieving more.

“It definitely does get hard sometimes because not only do you have to make sure that, being a new artist or being an artist in general, you push your music a whole lot,” she said. “You definitely want that recognition and the way you get that recognition is through social media now being as the pandemic is holding us back from being social in real life. And social media is literally a job in itself. Social media takes a lot of time, social media takes a lot of effort to make sure you put your music out there. And with me, I have the music, and then the social media, then there’s school, so I have a lot to focus on as an artist and as a person in general.”

Princess Rock said she’s testing her limits with her music. For example, her new song “Automatic,” has more singing than rapping in it and it’s a track she’s truly proud of.

“I’ve never done that before, ‘Automatic,’ was the first song where I was singing in it,” she said. “That song is really my baby. I love that song because I put a lot into it, a lot of time went into it, re-recorded it a lot of times and changed the song around. I was like this has to be as perfect as I can get it because that type of music, the Caribbean Island music, that’s in now. A lot of people do that now so I wanted to make sure this was perfect because that’s the style.”

Princess Rock said she’s working on a major project that may or may not include the singles she’s already released.

That project, an album called “New Cool,” will be an uplifting collection of music that encourages the listeners to be themselves.

“It’s about being yourself and making things that once weren’t cool before, making that your new cool,” she said. “If it’s different, so what, that’s your new cool, that’s your definition of cool. I’m going to stay on the topic of just uplifting people and being as inspirational and giving you the best advice through song.”
