Gracie Abrams has revealed that she struggled to enjoy one of the songs on her latest album because she wrote it during a period when she was "not feeling good".
The 26-year-old singer said she spent around six months avoiding her song Look At My Life, which appears on her new album Daughter from Hell. She eventually returned to the track after encouragement from her collaborator Aaron Dessner.
During an appearance on the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast, Gracie explained: "I really didn’t like that song until recently. I wrote it when I was not feeling good ... I have recency bias, I think, with writing. Sometimes after writing something, I have to put it away for a while and not acknowledge that it exists ...
"Aaron was like: 'I think this song is really great. Maybe revisit it?' It took like six months until I could hear it again and not want to rip my eyeballs out."
The singer said she is ultimately happy that she gave the track another opportunity instead of leaving it behind, adding: "I’m very glad that it resurfaced."
Gracie also revealed that she went through a similar experience with Mess It Up, a song she released in 2021. Although she was hesitant to perform it live, her fans eventually persuaded her to bring it back to her setlists.
Gracie said: "There are a few [songs] that I’ve expressed my grievances towards. At shows, my audience will basically [be] like the equivalent of someone standing outside your house with a pitchfork and torches, being like: 'Play it!'
"And I’m like: 'Okay, totally'. Mess It Up’ was one."
Her comments come after Gracie celebrated the overwhelming response to Daughter From Hell, which recently became her first album to reach Number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Her third studio album moved 124,000 equivalent album units during the week ending July 23, giving the singer her strongest sales week based on units as well.
Before this achievement, Gracie's highest Billboard 200 position came with The Secret of Us, which peaked at Number 2 in July 2024.
After learning that Daughter From Hell had claimed the top position, Gracie shared her excitement with fans on Instagram Stories.
She reposted Billboard’s announcement confirming the Number 1 result and wrote: “Whoa, thank you so much. “This is nuts, and entirely your doing!! Thank you."
