With "Inferno," which arrived in full at the stroke of midnight via Warp Records, the Scottish electronic duo brings to an end a 13-year drought.

The wait is finally over. Boards of Canada have returned with new music.

The Scottish electronic duo has officially ended a 13 year silence with the release of Inferno, which arrived at midnight through Warp Records. Few fans expected a new Boards of Canada album to appear in 2026, making the surprise release all the more remarkable. Inferno lands at a time when much of Europe is battling extreme heat and global anxieties continue to mount, creating a fitting backdrop for the record’s arrival.

As previously reported, the album features 18 tracks spread across 70 minutes and opens with the previously released songs “Introit” and “Prophecy At 1420 MHz.”

Inferno could prove to be Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin’s most adventurous project since 2002’s Geogaddi. Once the initial excitement of hearing a new Boards of Canada album settles, the collection unmistakably carries the group’s signature sound. The record feels vast in scope, shifting between moments of warmth, wonder, and beauty while also venturing into darker, dystopian territory. Fans searching for straightforward dance floor material may need to look elsewhere.

Among the album’s highlights are “You Retreat In Time And Space,” which evokes the atmosphere of an ancient cathedral, “Arena Americanada,” with its familiar and curious energy, and “Age of Capricorn,” whose enigmatic sampled vocal is likely to inspire endless fan theories and investigations.

On “Father And Son,” the duo delves into themes of cult mentality through what may be their most conversation driven composition to date, weaving spoken samples together with layers of electronic textures.

Inferno follows 2013’s Tomorrow’s Harvest, which became the duo’s first Top 10 album in the United Kingdom after reaching No. 7. The release also climbed to No. 13 on the Billboard 200, marking their debut appearance on the all genre U.S. albums chart.

The pair briefly resurfaced in 2019 with “XYZ,” an unreleased recording from their July 1998 Peel Session. The track appeared on Warp Records’ WXAXRXP Sessions collection, released as part of the label’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

Brothers Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin have long maintained an air of mystery around Boards of Canada. The duo are known for crafting immersive musical worlds while remaining largely out of the public eye. Live performances are rare, and media interviews are even rarer. There is little indication that their famously private approach will change anytime soon.

Inferno is available in several formats, including a limited edition red translucent double LP housed in a triple gatefold sleeve with a 16 page booklet, a standard black double LP edition, as well as CD and digital versions. More information can be found through boardsofcanada.com and Warp.net.
