Lizzo says she prefers to let listeners shape how they describe the sound of her music.
The "Good as Hell" artist recently released the title track from her upcoming third album B****, which is set to arrive next month, and she has been enjoying the reactions from fans to both the single and the snippets she has been teasing online.
Lizzo believes her music will always carry her signature style, but she finds it interesting to see how people interpret it.
Speaking to People magazine, she said: "I think it's always going to be the Lizzo sound.
"I don't know how to not be that girl, but I will say I posted a snippet of one of my new songs that's coming out very, very soon and somebody was like, 'The '90s are back.'
And I was like, 'Okay.' I like to let the people decide what the sound is."
At the core of it all, Lizzo says her focus is simply on creating strong, well crafted music.
She added: "I love constructing and producing and creating just well-crafted music and songs. So I hope everyone likes it."
The 38 year old’s single B**** reunites her with longtime collaborators Ricky Reed, Blake Slatkin, and Zack Sekoff, and includes an interpolation of Meredith Brooks’ 1997 hit of the same name.
That reference adds another layer to Lizzo’s current era, something she first hinted at years ago when she declared “I’m 100% that bitch” on her Diamond certified track "Truth Hurts."
B**** follows the release of "Don’t Make Me Love U" last month, another early preview from the upcoming project.
The song arrived alongside a striking visual that sees Lizzo face a past version of herself, touching on themes of growth, reflection, and emotional healing.
The track was met with strong reactions from both fans and critics, setting the tone for what is shaping up to be a confident new chapter.
Lizzo also recently spoke about why she chose the album title B****, explaining that she wants to reclaim the word and turn it into something empowering.
In a press statement announcing the project, she said: "Reclaiming the word B**** is power – it’s taking a label once used to diminish women and turning it into a declaration of confidence, and unapologetic self-love."
She added that the idea was inspired by Meredith Brooks’ song, as well as Missy Elliott, who released "She's a B****" in 1999, along with her own track "Truth Hurts."
Lizzo said: "So many incredible women in music have used the word for positivity like Meredith Brooks and Missy Elliot. It was only fitting to name my album B**** because it has become my favourite word when using it on my own terms and because I am 100 per cent that b****!"
The album will be Lizzo’s first full project since 2022’s Special, and it is scheduled for release on June 5.
