Eminem has marked 18 years of sobriety, reaching a major milestone after years of struggling with prescription drug addiction.
The Real Slim Shady artist, whose real name is Marshall Mathers III, shared the moment on Instagram this week, posting a photo of himself holding a sobriety chip.
The token carried the phrase "To thine own self be true" around the edge, while the words "unity, service, recovery" appeared in a triangle at the centre, alongside the number 18 written in Roman numerals.
The 53 year old kept his caption short, writing, "XVIII (gold medal emoji)."
Several well known names quickly showed their support in the comments, including Questlove, who wrote, "Awesome. Keep Goin." Big Sean also added, "Yessir! Keep it up."
The rapper has previously opened up about his dependence on prescription drugs, including Xanax, Ambien and Vicodin, most recently in his 2025 documentary Stans. He explained that it started in the late 1990s and gradually worsened until a serious health scare in 2008.
"I got into this vicious cycle of, 'I'm depressed so I need more pills,'" he said at the time, via Us Weekly. "Then your tolerance gets so high that you end up overdosing."
"I woke up in the hospital and I didn't know what happened," Eminem continued. "I woke up in the hospital with tubes in me and s**t and I couldn't get up, I wanted to move."
The rapper later shared that missing one of his eldest daughter Alaina Marie's birthdays became the turning point he needed.
"I cried because it was like, 'Oh my god, I missed that,'" he said. "I kept saying to myself, 'Do you want to fking miss this again? Do you want to miss everything? If you can't do it for yourself, you fking p**sy, at least do it for them.'"
The Mockingbird artist added, "I realised I'm never doing this again."
