Ronan Keating has said that Boyzone’s reunion shows later this year will represent the band’s “final chapter,” explaining that he would not agree to another full tour because it would be “incredibly unhealthy.”
The 48 year old performer is set to reunite with fellow members Michael Graham, Keith Duffy and Shane Lynch for two nights at Emirates Stadium in London on June 5 and June 6. The concerts will mark Boyzone’s first live appearances since their five night residency at the London Palladium in 2019.
Despite strong demand for additional dates, Ronan has made it clear the group has no interest in touring again and believes these two large scale shows will serve as a proper farewell to their fans.
Speaking with Vernon Kay on Tracks Of My Years on BBC Radio 2, he said: “It’s our way of writing the final chapter, saying goodbye.
“It’s a farewell tour. There’s no new music. We’re not getting the band back together again. We’re not touring across the world.
“There are offers coming in left, right and centre to go to Asia, to go into Europe. It’s a blanket no. And this is it.”
Ronan stressed that all four remaining members are aligned in their decision not to commit to a full tour, describing the situation as a challenging one for everyone involved.
He continued: “It would be incredibly unhealthy for us to do it.
“We’d take a massive step backwards in our lives. And to come away from that then, there’d be a lot of work on rebuilding ourselves individually to the strong people that we feel we are now.
“We all have our own lives and careers away from the band, but we can come back for that week.
“It’ll be spectacular. We’ll put on all the fireworks and make it magic. And there’ll be tears, but we’ll go out on a high and that’ll be our final chapter written.”
Boyzone originally formed in 1993 and also included the late Stephen Gately, who died in October 2009 at the age of 33.
The group went on to enjoy huge success in the UK, scoring six number one singles and five chart topping albums.
They first went their separate ways in 2000 as members pursued solo careers, before reuniting several years later in 2007.
Since that reunion, Boyzone have come together periodically for tours and releases, with their final studio album Thank You and Goodnight arriving in 2018.
Vernon Kay’s programme Tracks Of My Years airs on BBC Radio 2 from Monday to Friday between 9.30am and 12pm.
