Miley Cyrus has revealed that she wrote her new song Secrets as a “peace offering” for her father Billy Ray Cyrus.

The pop star released the deluxe edition of her ninth studio album Something Beautiful on Friday.

As part of the expanded release, Miley debuted the bonus track Secrets, recorded with former Fleetwood Mac members Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham, along with a new music video.

On Instagram, the Flowers singer explained that the inspiration for the track came while she was reconnecting with Billy after years of estrangement.

“This song was written as a peace offering for someone I had lost for a time but always loved. In my experience, forgiveness and freedom are one and the same,” she shared. “Thank you to Lindsey Buckingham & Mick Fleetwood for bringing magic to the music.”

She ended her post with a simple note: “This song is for my dad.”

Back in August, Billy previewed Secrets on Instagram, revealing that Miley had sent it to him as a gift for his 64th birthday.

Speaking about the song on the Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky podcast in June, Miley reflected on the emotions she worked through while writing such a personal track.

“I wrote this song about my dad, because I wanted him to tell me, even though they were secrets, even though I didn’t really want to know, I wanted to be the one he felt safe enough to share the things that were painful and damaging to the family,” she said. “But I wanted him to believe that, as a middle child, I was old enough to carry some of that weight. I always wanted my family to feel like I was the safe place, the one holding the white flag when they came to me.”
