Ashlee Simpson remembered the “insane” bullying she endured after her Saturday Night Live performance went wrong.
The singer reflected on the ups and downs of her career during an appearance on the Pod Meets World podcast on Thursday. Co-host Danielle Fishel asked Ashlee about the infamous 2004 incident, which made her the first artist to walk off the stage during a Saturday Night Live performance.
Ashlee, who was only 20 at the time, was left scrambling after her hit single Pieces of Me began playing with her pre-recorded vocals before she had even lifted the microphone to her mouth.
"I think it's a different era ... I think during that time, I mean, the bullying was insane," the 40-year-old recalled.
Ashlee had been scheduled to sing her track Autobiography but was caught on camera appearing visibly confused. She then danced awkwardly for a moment before leaving the stage while her band continued to play. The choice to lip-sync drew massive backlash, and Ashlee later explained that a flare-up of acid reflux had impacted her voice.
Speaking in Thursday’s interview, Ashlee admitted that she spent years working to make up for the embarrassment of that moment.
She said, "But then my whole life, I had to tell people, 'Oh, but I perform every night.' My fans know. I had to know that in my heart."
"Yes, I've had ups and downs just like every other human," she added.
Ashlee also touched on other difficult chapters in her life, recalling the release of her debut album Autobiography in 2004.
Describing the record as the "diary of my life," she revealed that a toxic relationship inspired some of its lyrics.
"I had a boyfriend who was like, 'You look fat, you need to get on the treadmill!'" Ashlee shared. She laughed as she remembered her immediate reaction, saying, "Get ready for what I'm about to say."
