New Addiction: James Atlas Has a Banger on His Hands with “Retail Therapy”

James Atlas doesn’t just make music. Rather, his artistry is akin to vivid experience. With his latest release, Retail Therapy,” the Australian-born artist has a brilliant anthem for our age of consumer culture. The lead-up track to his self-titled album is a playful, relatable, and reflective take on the universal pastime of shopping with its mix of rhythms and sound effects, like the swipe of credit cards and the ring of cash registers, immersing listeners in a world of indulgence.

The eureka moment for “Retail Therapy” came to Atlas after a shopping trip in the United Arab Emirates. “I was in Dubai at the time, and that’s when I was sent the arrangement for the song. I had just left the Dubai Mall, and the music had this big, grandiose feel to it, so my mind went straight back to where I had just been,” he says. The mall was so epic that I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if I made this song about shopping addiction?’”

However, Atlas also wanted to explore the emotional side of consumerism and its link to personal fulfillment. "The first line of the song is asking, 'How do I fill this void inside of me?' It’s a pretty universal theme. Then, the chorus is 'Take it all home with me. I want more of everything.' It’s about indulging in that shopping spree and gifting yourself. It’s humorous, but at the same time, it’s also a nod to our humanity—laughing at our own shopping addiction while also reveling in it."

Yet, “Retail Therapy” is more than a dance track. Atlas sees it as the perfect companion to the digital era—primed to become the go-to sound for unboxing videos, shopping hauls, and moments of retail escapism on social media.

For Atlas, his musical journey began in Australia, where he spent years as a drummer in metal bands while studying jazz. A move to Europe further shaped his artistry, exposing him to diverse influences and inspiring his distinctive sound—a mix of lo-fi, pop, rock, and jazz. Meanwhile, living in the United States later added a layer of depth to his work. Reflecting on his process, he says, “Basically, I started experimenting and putting different effects and pedals over the acoustic guitar and triggering different live samples, and then I realized I wanted an even more lush soundscape because that’s what I was gravitating toward.”

As for “Retail Therapy,” Atlas linked up with DJ Sever and recorded it in Russia. Along with the actual song, Atlas had the chance to flex his creativity even more with a self-produced visualizer. Further pushing boundaries, is introducing a limited-edition 3D-printed rocket, which ties into his broader vision for the album. Drawing inspiration from his background in 3D modeling, Atlas designed a 3D rocket based on the shape of an Edison light bulb. The innovative part? Each rocket will feature a QR code embedded in its porthole. When fans scan the code with their phones, it will lead them to the album, creating a tactile connection to the music, rare in today’s digital age.

“This will be available on my website pretty soon,” Atlas revealed, explaining that fans can purchase the rocket as a physical object before the digital release of the album takes place. He’s particularly excited about how it might play out, noting that it will be interesting to see how many people opt for the physical item over the usual digital download. “We don’t have anything tangible these days to hold onto and listen to the music,” he said. For Atlas, the rocket serves as a symbol of his commitment to blending the physical and digital worlds, offering fans an experience that goes beyond streaming.

Touching on real-life plans, Atlas is looking forward to releasing his album this December and performing in Australia, Thailand, Europe, and America in the coming months.
