Artist Penny Taylor is making waves with his latest single, “Cuff,” released on June 5. Known for his roots in traditional hip-hop and rap, Taylor ventures into new territory with this track, blending R&B vibes with mainstream appeal.
Despite this being his debut writing a full R&B song, Taylor seamlessly integrates hip-hop influences into “Cuff,” creating a timeless and fresh vibe. His soulful vocals glide effortlessly over a smooth melody, making “Cuff” a track you’ll want on repeat, blending classic R&B themes with today’s edgy hip-hop.
“If you listen to the lyrics, it’s all about being committed to one person and letting them know, not hiding behind motives, just laying everything out on front street — expressing how you’re feeling and how much you want to be with them,” shared Taylor.
“There’s urgency behind the lyrics. It’s not a cat-and-mouse game, it’s — I want you right now!”
An accomplished songwriter, Taylor crafted “Cuff” in two to three hours. While the songwriting process flowed naturally, Taylor and his team dedicated four to five recording sessions to meticulously record and mix the track, ensuring top-notch production quality.
Currently released as an independent single, Taylor hinted at the future, suggesting a potential mixtape, EP, or a new project slated for early 2025, with “Cuff” likely making an appearance.
“Those are the best songs that just write themselves. While I was able to write it down quickly, we really took our time with the production,” said Taylor. “It took us about a month and a half to two months to ensure the quality of the song and that it was to industry standards.”
As Taylor mentioned, ensuring “Cuff” met industry standards was paramount. The same approach was applied to the music video, which premiered on YouTube and Apple Music on June 5. With a fully staffed team, filming spanned four to five days in total. Taylor’s hands-on approach extended from scripting to storyboarding, ensuring his creative vision permeated every aspect of the video’s creation.
Taylor’s journey with music began as a fun, creative outlet, a space to enjoy time with friends and impress them with his verses. However, around 2018, he found his stride, becoming more adept on the mic and honing his skills in writing and recording. It was during this period that Taylor realized his ambition to pursue music professionally.
Although his education didn’t include formal music or theory studies, he dedicated his life to studying and refining his craft.
“My first body of work was just a mixtape called ‘Talk to Me Nice,’ and I released it in 2019. There were about 13 - 14 tracks on there,” continued Taylor. “That’s the project that made me realize that I could take music to another level and pursue it.”
In addition to his latest track and ongoing projects, Taylor’s calendar is packed with live performances. Don’t miss him as he lights up stages throughout the summer and fall.
“And I perform ‘Cuff’ every time — it’s becoming a fan favorite. It’s definitely one of the best songs I’ve ever made,” enthused Taylor.
