Oleg Krylov has been involved in music for more than two decades, and he’s spent most of that time focusing on movie scores and more orchestral music.
Now the composer and music producer, who’s worked on projects for movies and television around the world, has changed his mind about what he wants to focus on. He’s left scoring for the screen behind, and now wants to open himself up to the world and reach out to an audience for the first time.
“Participating in movie projects can be interesting but exclusive projects like that don’t allow you to just play out your ideas efficiently and effectively,” he says. “I thought maybe it can be interesting to leverage today’s streaming platforms. Thanks to the computer technologies and all these tools that appeared, I had an opportunity to kind of realize my music ideas thanks to different samples and editors. It really enabled my creativity.”
Krylov began posting music to Spotify last year, starting with the seven-song album Sci-Fi Odyssey, with tracks unearthed from his archives and compiled as the score for a space-themed movie. He followed that up with three more singles: “Recycle,” “I’m Just a Cat,” and his latest, “Christmas Flashbacks.”
That newest single, which he released December 22, was designed to reflect what Krylov calls “a very bright time.”
“People are relaxed, you can talk to them easily, kind of reach out to their souls again, right?” he says. “It’s Christmastime, it’s a season of magic and kindness and families. The drawback is it’s a very short spark, so to speak.”
The music is calm, cheery and relaxed with a steady hip hop beat accentuated by some festive touches, and vocals provided by session musicians. But the song also has some minor notes, and Krylov doesn’t envision a fully festive atmosphere when he hears it.
“Possibly it’s not Christmastime, it doesn’t sound like that,” he says. “It’s exactly the time after Christmas, this is what it expresses. You’re still celebrating and have this mood of celebration and you start thinking about the past because of some associations, special occasions are a good time for this to happen. That’s how it was born, I think.”
For Krylov, music is a language for the soul and the best way to express emotions.
“It expresses your thoughts, your life and everything that is around you so it’s very human oriented,” he says. “It expresses what you feel, what you fear, what you like and what you adore. Everything can be expressed by music, I think.”
His first release of 2024 will drop in a matter of weeks; he describes it as a more serious, philosophical track about our lives and how they are structured.
“It will be interesting for me personally to see the reaction of the audience and what people think about it,” Krylov says. “It’s another hip hop, rap track called ‘Against Entropy.’ Everything revolves around that term, entropy.”
