Up-and-coming hyper pop artist Aurora Takeover brings us an unexpected new emo pop album laced with AI spoken word and a cohesive storyline. The feature single, “See You Die,”
Hailing from Massachusetts, Aurora Takeover began singing and writing his own music from an early age. In 2019, Aurora dropped out of college to pursue music professionally. Soon after, he released his first song, “Walls,” on Spotify and Apple Music. Flash forward two albums, two EPs, and eight singles, we arrive at the present day and the release of Aurora’s latest concept album, Misery (Pt. 2 Independent).
“The previous album is about someone being strung out on drugs and needing people to enable his lifestyle,” explains the artist. “When everything gets stripped away, he decides to get cleaned up. Then when he gets better, he relapses again.”
In order to push the story from song to song, Aurora Takeover enlisted the help of an AI voice to bridge the gaps in the first four songs of his previous album. “It represents the conscience,” shares the artist. “Two brain cells talking to each other to further the story of what’s going on. It’s spoken word but AI generated.” In the first song, we hear AI spoken word in a song about relapsing. “It’s basically the conscience talking, saying, ‘we can’t handle this, it’s not good if we keep this up.’ So, the person comes up with a plan to make life happier and moves into the next song.”
“Now on this album [Misery (Pt. 2 Independent], he finds reason to get cleaned up and gets gifted things for doing better in life. He gets a girlfriend—only she’s a reflection of what he used to be. He’s picking up the pieces and can’t stand her baggage anymore. She’s in a bad spot that might cost her life. This song is an ultimatum—‘I don’t want to help you anymore but I don’t want to see you die.’”
“See You Die,” the featured single off the album, is a cry of desperation set to an upbeat vibe. The single opens with a voice that swiftly makes way for Aurora Takeover’s storyline. At the surface, the song is easy listening, mellow yet somehow cheerful. Upon further observation, listeners can follow a deep range of emotions as the protagonist faces a difficult dilemma of seeing a loved one go down a dark road. While the single (and album as a whole) are fictional/concept based, they explore a range of human emotions that Aurora Takeover captures lyrically.
Creating his moniker wasn’t intentional or extraordinarily meaningful for that matter. “It doesn’t mean anything really,” laughs the artist about his stage name. “I created it at age 16 when I started putting music online on YouTube and didn’t want people to know I was making music. So, I randomly created ‘Aurora Takeover’ based off the Aurora Borealis, though there’s not much of a tie to that but I liked the way it sounded.” His stage name has come a long way since, from wanting to hide his music to placing it centerstage.
When it comes to writing music, Aurora Takeover is selective about his instrumentals. Once he finds a beat that speaks to him, the artist develops the melody or cadence to go with it. Only then will he worry about the lyrics. “The groove of the melody depicts whether it’s a happy or sad song,” shares Aurora Takeover. “I go off whatever feeling I get from the melody and beat and then write the lyrics.” The artist credits his new audio engineer for helping him develop his sound. “[My audio engineer] Get2Gether is awesome,” he adds.
Misery (Pt. 2 Independent) highlights a significant shift from the previous album. “I was always doing the engineering myself on songs and mixing my vocals in,” shares Aurora Takeover. “But for this album, I found an audio engineer halfway through recording the project. I released my half and then reinvented my sound for part two.”
In addition to his latest single and album, Aurora Takeover is looking forward to sharing a new project in 2024 titled Egocentric. The concept album focuses on the ego, going through “every motion of your ego.”
“I’m going to keep creating,” shares Aurora Takeover. All we need to do is be ready to listen.
