OTTAWA, ON—A love for both hip hop and pop punk in his youth has made Dead Hendrix’s sound. On his latest single, “Mustang,” he sticks with trap beats, alternative guitar blaring in the background, and a feature by fellow Canadian* rapper Young Cudi.
While the single has currently reached 93k streams on platforms, Dead Hendrix is looking towards the future and the success the track has brought him, opening doors to new audiences for the rapper.
“Since the release, it’s been great, the fans have connected with it completely,” says Dead Hendrix.
“When I dropped the song, I remember the whole thing was that I wanted to bring these two genres together in a way that people wouldn’t think would work, and make it work. I gained a lot of respect from the new fan base.”
The single has also brought fans of both genres to his show, melding together different scenes and piquing interest in his self-proclaimed genre.
“It’s really interesting because when I play live shows it’s so cool to see all the different people coming, the different sides,” he says. “But sometimes if I’m part of a rap show, some of my punk fans will be like ‘it’s not really my scene’ So it’s really great to have my own shows going, that’s my favorite performing-wise.”
Dead Hendrix is enjoying the attention “Mustang” and his feature on the Ottawa X Toronto compilation alongside 3MFrench, recently recording music videos for both songs (“Mustang”’s, of course, featuring a slime green Mustang convertible), furthering the combination of pop and rap is what the future holds for the rapper.
“It really accomplished its goal and my fans who are already my fans and my fans from this song are really excited for what’s next and how I’m growing this genre.”
