London rapper channels pain into music with single ‘Migraine’

LONDON, U.K. — The London artist Rebel ACA is working with dancehall giant Spragga Benz and the Godfather of U.K. hip hop Rodney P to channel his pain into energy for his latest single “Migraine.”

Rebel ACA channels the severe pain of having daily migraines into two versions of the single; the original is an “Old

Cool FU NK” hip hop version and the other is a drum and bass mix by DJ Phantasy, featuring a funky, constant drone throughout the track.

The song features pulsating energy and the twists and turns representing the pounding pain, vertigo and tinnitus associated with the extreme head pain.

“I know of so many people, including myself, who suffer from debilitating migraines,” said Rebel ACA. “It felt good to put the pain into music, a sort of release of suffering through the lyrics. It feels good to use this amazing genre of music to communicate about ordinary day to day things, like suffering from a bad headache. It feels good to shift from the classic dialogue of sex and violence, so often present in hip hop lyrics.”

Rebel ACA said he decided that London hip hop had taken on too much of the American and Jamaican conversations about sex, money and violence, and he wanted to talk about something else in his songs.

“I’m just trying to talk about something other than bitches and rooms and money,” he said. “It’s a bit strange, I'm a huge hip hop fan and stuff but it’s strange that we like to listen to people who are 20 years old and what they think about the world because how many 20-year-kids do you  know who’ve got anything useful to talk about in the world.”

Rebel ACA said migraines strike and can take over a person’s existence. He said he focuses on avoiding triggers like different forms of light to help control his pain.

“I have migraines a lot,” Rebel ACA said. “I’ve sort of got them under control a little bit, but I have them a lot. It’s been a big part of life, I guess it’s been a big part of a lot of people’s lives. But hey, it’s not cancer, the doctors say. There’s lots of types, they’re often horrible but there’s a million shades of them for sure.”

Spragga Benz and Rodney P come together with Rebel ACA in “Migraine” to capture the essence of a migraine and the probable positive effect of cannabis which is yet to be embraced fully by the medical world, but is helping so many with their intense suffering.

“Spragga Benz is considered one of the greatest lyricists in Jamaica, he’s certainly a big deal if you’re into dance hall music,” Rebel ACA said. “He’s never had migraines, the bastard, but he wrote about marijuana for migraines. And weed is kind of useful for migraines or ‘mee-graines’ as we say in England, so he wrote about that. Then Rodney P similarly wrote about taking the play on words with ‘my grains of weed.’ But the song is about migraines, getting them, having them.”

Rebel ACA records under Buttercuts Records, a company he owns and operates.

The London-based production company has been "bashing out buttery beats" since 2000. Buttercuts Records is the go-to place for releasing hip hop, reggae, breaks, funk, soul, and folk records with a tongue-in-cheek attitude and marketing that surpasses witty wordplay.

As ‘Migraine’ gains international attention, one can appreciate how Rebel ACA combines old and new hip hop with effortless flows and brilliant lyrics.

Maybe the world is ready for an international tax advisor who drops bars and vibes out to some wicked rhymes.
