Spiritual connection is what gives Dallas-based singer Joyous Lola the inspiration for her music. Growing up in the choir, Joyous Lola, born *, cultivated her voice in the church but did not realize her talent until a religious moment in 2019.
“I went through some stuff in my later years and in the process, had encounters with Jesus and from there in my life. And I feel like though that's pulling me into the gospel music industry,” says Joyous Lola, who has since released two singles. “When I had encounters with Jesus, it was in 2019, and then immediately after that, I felt like God wanted me to go into that industry and started giving me songs. And then I started writing.”
Her latest single. “We Worship You” reflects that faith, starring a backing band. Its instrumentals cross both gospel and jazz, featuring saxophone, keyboard, and two backup singers Joyous Lola says the song is about bringing inspiration towards praise and worship and the kindness her faith has been to her, explaining her songwriting process as more revelation than a meticulously crafted method.
“I don't really sit and say, Oh, I want to write a song. For me, I just receive it. If I say I'm writing it, I'm just going to be saying that,” explains Joyous Lola. “I received this song from God and with inspiration from the Holy Spirit. I received the whole song, and I recorded it and wrote it down. So basically, that's it for me. Then when it's time to produce it, I contact my producer, and then we work on the beat.”
While Joyous Lola wants to focus on releasing singles, having a handful of songs already written, she’s gearing up for an upcoming album release. She envisions a career in the music industry, but also helping others through how religion has affected her art.
“I feel good about it because I feel I'm doing what God wants me to do. So I like it. And before then, I eventually released two Afro gospels. So I knew that that's not what God wanted me to do. God gave me the song. But the style that he wants me to do is what I'm singing now. And I'm happy about it.”
