CAMPINAS, Brazil — Overcoming poor beginnings and a hard upbringing, Brazilian electronic dance artist Illusionize is set to lead and unleash what he calls a “Brazilian Storm” on his country and the world.
“The message is forget about everything and enjoy this moment,” Illusionize said. “The Brazilian dance music scene is on the rise! We are experiencing what many have called the Brazilian Storm, with countless national DJs and producers reaching worldwide recognition! Indeed, it is a very fertile moment, with many possibilities for the Brazilian industry.”
Illusionize, also known as Pedro Mendes, released two singles late in 2022 called “Go Low” and “The Groov” from an upcoming 2023 DJ set.
“This year will be awesome!” he said. “In March, we will start a new phase at Elevation Music Records – the record company I work with. We will present several showcases spread throughout the country and, on the second semester, we will have a very special independent show that I have been planning for, at least, two years.”
Illusionize said “Go Low” was made with Fabio, the other original member of Illusionize with Mendes.
“It was a track from the middle of the pandemic,” Mendez said. “I was on vacation at the time, and I was going back and forth many places like between my mother’s house and my mother-in-law’s house, trying to make something light. It was a creative time, where many other songs were made like ‘Pike.’ After a whole year, I can finally release this one.”
“The Groov” is a song that Mendes describes as a modern song with a clear message. His friend Dalton brought him the lyrics to translate. After he did, he said he was “amused by them, they made sense to him.”
“I believe the voice is the most remarkable thing about this track, the message it sends is amazing and needs to be spread,” Mendes said. “The song's synthesis and percussion complement all of this in a unique way. I really enjoy the result of this incredible work.”
When asked to describe his sound, Mendes said he’s known as “The King of Low Bass,” in Brazil.
“But I believe it’s more than that,” he said. “If I could describe my music, I would call it unique and authentic. If that is what you are looking for, then, you will love it!”
Mendes released two documentaries on YouTube detailing his journey from obscurity to fame in the dance and music scene.
“I’m a person who has been living for music since I was a teenager and I had the pleasure of becoming famous through the Illusionize project,” Mendes said. “And, ever since, I’m living this experience. I have a long relationship with dance music. And I think the best way to explain that is by showing it.
“There are two documentaries displaying this journey: Born to Bass is the oldest one; and during the pandemics, it was recorded a most recent one: Born to Bass: Keep The Bass Alive. I believe you will enjoy.”
Mendes said he believes his success in Brazil can translate into success around the world.
“I believe that being successful in Brazil and in the rest of the world is something very similar,” he said. “Of course, that’s not an easy thing, and anyone who says otherwise is lying or has no specific experience! But it can be done, I think that’s the main message we need to spread. Believe, persist and things will happen.”
