Musician Dolla Bill’s lyrics came first.

Musician Dolla Bill’s lyrics came first. Then, a vocal style emulating seminal music from his teenagehood. Connecting his experiences in his lyrics, he was also looking to emulate it through particular genres that has now evolved into an experimental take on hip-hop, country, hard rock, and heavy metal.

“The lyrics always came from deep inside of me. I always like writing the lyrics first, then composing the verses. It's almost like poetry at first. It was verses and then trying to set those verses or lyrics to melody. Once I had a melody,  I took it to that next phase where I would try to emulate a particular frontmen or a genre like that.”

Dolla Bill got into hip-hop after moving to North Carolina in 2013, inspired by experimenting on vocals while recording a track that turned into a spoken word piece. An old co-worker, who had also been rapping, inspired Dolla Bill when challenged to a freestyle. This became a daily routine for the two after the co-worker was impressed, who then came up with his now stage.

A decade later, Dolla Bill shows fans all the genres he was inspired by while starting out.

His single “House On the Hill” represents his hip-hop style, incorporating three different vocal layers Dolla Bill describes as spoken word, melodic falsettos, and lofi rap. The track details the dynamics of a relationship and wanting to provide for your partner in bigger ways. Dolla Bill uses the track title as a metaphor for climbing uphill for a relationship, romance and hustle while overcoming struggles.

“My significant other says, ‘I'd love to have this $800,000 house’,” he explains. “And I'm like, ‘Yep, I have no problem.’ But it's the energy because even though you really can't afford it and you know that, in reality it's where the heart is.” “House On the Hill”’s music video is inspired by the silhouette of two people dancing inside a home.

Dolla Bill’s latest single “I Called You Baby” has a similar vibe, a track about romancing with your significant other on a tropical beach. While he musician has a hip-hop focus, his other releases include country singles “Those Little Lies'' and “Wait For You.”

“Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, maybe even not next week, but in the future, who knows? I might crank out another country track,” says Dolla Bill “I have a track out right now called "She's Got Game" that's a rock track I did a while back. I go with my creative energy, that creative jones, or that fire still kicking up. It's almost like a stream of consciousness.”

Though his music composing style has remained the same, Dolla Bill always keeps listeners surprised.
