Chicago’s up-and-coming hip hop artist GBO has released his latest single “Gone Too Soon”, a single that remembers and celebrates the life of a dear friend who had passed away.
The single reminisces upon the memories that GBO has had with his friend, reflecting upon what it means to live on and find happiness and hope after a loss.
“Gone Too Soon” is the combination of GBO’s talented storytelling, the colorful vocals of his collaborator Rachael Philipp, and the inviting emotions felt from its moving guitar instrumental. It opens up a space for contemplation, where GBO openly processes the emotions of loss to help audiences navigate their own experiences of grieving and remembering.
He says, “The song came about as I thought about the people I’ve lost and what that meant for me. I wanted to make something to encourage people to stay positive, to have hope, and to still live their lives happily even after loss.”
GBO’s storytelling ability is the result of years of dedicated practice. Growing up, GBO fell in love with hip-hop and R&B because of its ability to let out an emotion while telling a story. In his own music, GBO seeks to navigate audiences from one emotion from another, helping them reach happiness by moving the moods of people towards it.
GBO thus views happiness as something he can gift to others using his music, an act which motivates him as an artist. He says, “The people I’ve lost have motivated me to try my best to live happily. Your time is your time. It’s limited and your most valuable resource. It’s the thing you must spend wisely because it’s more finite than money. Money comes and goes, but you only have so much time.”
To help us realize our limited time, GBO uses the emotions of “Gone Too Soon” to help us break the numbness of our everyday. He inspires us to remember our hopes and to appreciate what’s around us, encouraging us to open up to the potential happiness that is already there nearby us.
With all this, GBO looks forward to making more fun and happy music in the coming months. He says, “Even though this song was a bit sad, my focus isn’t on sad music. I’m a happy person and I want to make people feel good in the end.”
Throughout this year, GBO looks forward to growth, deepening his fanbase, and making great music that inspires people.
