DETROIT – Jullian Kirkland – known as Ju Beanz – has nailed a versatile sound that resonates with a wide range of Hip-Hop fans, but his story is just as captivating.

At a young age, Jullian was inspired by another artist who emerged from the Detroit area … Eminem. The 12-year-old started writing songs, having fun with wordplay and rapping with his best friend, Miles. The two teens were walking home from school one day, and Miles talked Jullian into recording his first song. But where can two 15-year-olds find quiet, privacy and adequate acoustics?

“There was this McDonald’s on the corner on the way home,” Jullian said through laughter. “It must have been really bad cause we were in there an hour and nobody came in. That song is nonexistent now but I remember the sound was almost there. We used this old, rusty laptop and a chewed up mic Miles got from his brother [laughs] Miles is still my good friend. And now – 17 years later – one of my latest songs made #28 on the iTunes Hip-Hop Chart.”

You could say it’s a moment of “Breakthrough.” That’s the name of Jullian’s EP – four powerful songs including that high-ranking iTunes song, “Relentless Rain,” featuring the vocal talent of Nikki Long. It’s a song about struggle, with deep, meaningful lyrics that let listeners know their storms won’t last forever.

“I’ve received a lot of positive feedback for ‘Relentless Rain,’” Jullian said. “It’s surprised me how well that song is doing, but honestly that’s what my songs are meant to do – inspire and encourage. My faith is in my music cause it’s a part of who I am. I have personally experienced God getting me out of situations that seemed impossible. And even though I’m not where I want to be yet, I’m not where I used to be. ‘Breakthrough’ is a representation of that, and no two songs are the same.”

Listeners can dive into a club experience with “Under-Rated” – a fun song that’s young and alive. On top of “Un-Leashed,” Jullian’s fans are on the edge of their seats waiting for his new dance song that’s expected to drop before summer’s over.

“I’ve been doing this long enough to know it’s a gift,” Jullian said. “One of the reasons I made it this far is my team. My parents are close, my uncle mentors me, and I have a friend who’s like a sister doing my videography. She’s amazing. The whole thing of making music that resonates with people – I realize it’s a gift. I want people to say my music is enjoyable, to have fun with it.”
