ATLANTA — He’s an underground artist but in his world, he's a leader in the streets and on the record charts.
President Hill is taking the southern rap scene for a ride with his new album, “The Elected Official,” a 22-track creation with something for everyone.
“Everybody should get excited and find something they like on this album,” said President Hill. “Of course I’ve got other just straight raw gansta stuff on there like ‘I’m Takin’ Off,’ and ‘Every Corner Mine,’ where I just turn my barrel on the devil’s head. There are a lot of commercially viable tracks on there that we’re going to release for radio and in the club and also have a lot of gutter tracks on there that shows my MC prowess. It’s got something for everybody.”
Raised in Atlanta, President Hill watched as hip hop’s trends and glitter flowed from the West Coast to the East Coast to the Midwest and was ready for it when it came to the South.
He started his own music company, Merciless Nation, as more than just a record label.
“Atlanta right now is a music Mecca,” the President said. “Everybody is coming here to do music to link up with different producers, and I’m from Atlanta, born right here and I do my music, different producers are reaching out to me. But on this particular album, I created 20 of the 22 tracks. The main thing I try to always relay is that Merciless Nation is not just a record label, we’re here for a purpose. I’m not just a rapper, I want to definitely get that to people.”
He hit the scene hard with his single “You Feeling it Shawty,” an open ended track that hits different people in different ways.
“It was just another day in the studio working,” President Hill said. “Once I began to play with the keys I dropped in that particular sample on the background, the lady singing and that’s when I began to write that hook. I did the first verse and after that it was pretty much over with. I really liked it. It just reminded me of going back in time with that kind of lingo, you feeling it shawty? I get feedback that everybody’s getting something different from it. Everyone is telling me different things about what they feel when they hear it, some people tell me it feels like old school, other people telling me I feel like I’m at the beach somewhere. Other people telling me this is going to be lit in the clubs, so I’m like man, when I wrote it it was just I felt a little homage to the old-style lingo.”
Another song on “The Elected Official” album, “I Decided,” was much more intentional in meaning and impact.
“That song I was trying to relate that sometimes in life you're going to have to make a decision,” Hill said. “And you’re going to be the only one who understands it’s the right decision. It’s going to be dark and you’re going to have to wait until the light comes before everyone else realizes that you made the right decision. If you don’t make a decision, it’s going to affect too many people. So you need to make that decision, even if you’ve got to make it alone.”
“The Elected Official,” was released on all platforms on Feb. 22 and is just starting to take off.
Coming up from his days hustling on the street, President Hill is on a mission to change the next generation’s mindset.
“When you have talent, you can sway the next generation,” he said. “We can explore our impact and still affect the next generation. It can still be gangsta and classy.”
President Hill is a rising artist just getting started with no signs of slowing down. “If you dig this flavor,” he said, “just wait until you see what is next.
