LOS ANGELES - Sometimes the best things happen at the spur of the moment, just ask Riyad Hasaan about his latest and best work yet, “Hatin.”
Riyad Hasaan is a songwriter, producer, and all-around artist getting noticed for his jamming Detroit-style rhythm on “Hatin,” his latest single.
“It was actually a spur-of-the-moment thing,” said Hasaan when asked about the song’s origin. “I was just really stressed at the way some people were just acting around me. In the industry, you deal with a lot of hate essentially, people that are one minute your best friend, and then they turn around, and they (are) like somebody you never met before.”
Hasaan “blew off some steam” and cranked out “Hatin” in a few hours using his craft as his outlet. The finished rap is a heart beating narrative of infectious rhymes and plenty of energy. Listeners love this song for cruising the boulevard, jamming at parties, and just enjoying the powerful lyrics.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, you can hear some of the East Coast vibes in Hasaan’s songs, and you will even get to see his old neighborhood with the “Hatin” video that is slated to drop in January 2022.
Returning to his hometown, Hasaan said, “The plan for the video is to have a lot of people on dirt bikes and just showing off the Philly culture. I feel like I have to get back there to shoot the video out of respect for my city. The scenery and my neighborhood that I grew up in are perfect for the video.”
While “Hatin” is continuing to gain traction with listeners as more fans get to hear Hasaan’s unique style, this is not his first time in the studio. Before “Hatin,” he worked as a studio producer for movie soundtracks. But after a friend encouraged him to step up to the mic, the artist in Hasaan was born - and there was no stopping him.
The self-titled Riyad Hasaan album was released in February 2021, gaining widespread popularity on streaming services, especially in Africa. Not content with stopping there, Hasaan has another self-titled album ready to drop in December.
“It’s just going to be better, more creative, and have a different amount of features compared to my first album. It’s just a new version of myself from that previous one. It’s a different story being told,” he said.
Drawing from real-life experiences, this former Marine packs each song with energy and passion with every beat. While some music critics call his music rap and others deem it hip hop, don’t ask Hasaan to label it.
“This is art. Music is frequently mislabeled when people just make up names to sell it. It’s a societal thing, and I just try to let my music do the talking,” he said.
And talking it does, as Hasaan’s infectious and relatable narratives tell the story of a man who can communicate to others through his music. “When people listen to my music, I want people to really just relate and not just listen to it. They need to know that I am talking to them,” he added.
