JoJo appears to have been caught off guard by the sudden announcement that Chess will close earlier than expected on Broadway.
The “Too Little, Too Late” singer had been scheduled to take over the role of Florence Vassy from Lea Michele in the revival of the classic musical created by Tim Rice, Björn Ulvaeus, and Benny Andersson at the Imperial Theatre.
JoJo’s run in the production was expected to begin in June and continue through September 13.
However, producers confirmed on Tuesday that the show would officially close on June 21 after completing 241 performances.
Shortly after the announcement, a fan commented on the musical’s official Instagram page expressing hope that JoJo might still appear during the final weeks of the show.
“I’m manifesting that JoJo joins as the alternate for these last few weeks or something. She deserves some shows!!” the moderator behind the @BroadwayWorks account wrote.
In response, JoJo, whose real name is Joanna Levesque, revealed that her plans with the production had effectively ended before they even began. The singer did not specify exactly when she learned about the cancellation.
“Was suppose (sic) to start first day of rehearsals TODAY. So bummed. All my love to the company,” she replied.
The latest Broadway version of Chess, which also starred Aaron Tveit and Nicholas Christopher, earned five nominations at the 2026 Tony Awards but was notably left out of the Best Revival of a Musical category.
In a joint statement addressing the early closure, the producers praised the cast and creative team for their work on the production.
“We are immensely proud of the extraordinary work this cast and creative team have done in reimagining Chess for a new generation of theatregoers while honouring the passionate fans who have championed this musical for nearly four decades,” the statement read. “Bringing Chess back to Broadway for the first time in nearly 40 years has been an enormous privilege, and we are extremely proud of everything this production accomplished during its historic Broadway run.”
