Dave Grohl Reflects on a Foo Fighters Lyric He Regrets

The frontman and his bandmates took on the Hot Ones Versus challenge together.

Foo Fighters brought plenty of heat to their appearance on Hot Ones Versus, and not just because of the increasingly spicy chicken wings. The episode also featured brutally honest stories, sharp opinions and classic humor from Dave Grohl and the rest of the band.

Grohl joined bandmates Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, Rami Jaffee and Ilan Rubin for the competition style spin off of the popular First We Feast series in the episode released Tuesday, May 19.

Despite the escalating spice levels, none of the band members completely fell apart during the challenge, aside from a little sweating and a few burps. Grohl’s trademark honesty also helped him avoid eating several of the dreaded “death wings.”

One of those moments came when Grohl was asked which Foo Fighters lyric makes him cringe the most. “Take your pick. I swear there’s so many I hate,” he admitted while the rest of the group burst out laughing.

“That song DOA,” he continued, successfully avoiding the penalty wing. “‘It’s a shame we have to die, my dear/ No one’s getting out of here alive.’ That’s so f–king stupid. That’s one of those I wrote because you guys were like, ‘Dave, sing something, anything.’”

Even if Grohl is not personally a fan of the lyric, “DOA” still became a successful single for the band. Released in 2005, the track reached No. 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains one of the group’s 10 entries on the chart.

Throughout the episode, the band also took part in a series of challenges that included ranking each other’s former bands, revealing which artists they never want to tour with again and competing in musical chairs.

Grohl also shared a memorable story involving a blunt exchange with late music legend David Bowie.

“I asked him to collaborate on something,” Grohl explained. “It was for a movie soundtrack. He said, ‘That’s not really my genre or thing. I’d love to do something, but I don’t think this is it.’ I didn’t want to bother him anymore, so I just wrote, ‘Hey man, thank you very much, I hope to see you soon.’”

Grohl then revealed Bowie’s immediate reply. “‘Well, that’s settled then,’” he recalled the email saying. “‘Now f–k off.’”

The band’s latest album, Your Favorite Toy, arrived in April and reached No. 23 on the Billboard 200.
