Chasing the highs of her Tumblr-addled youth, Slayyyter finds her sound in a new strain of brash, sleazy pop
Our introduction to the third studio album from ever rising pop talent Slayyyter comes through a bold display of reckless glamour and indulgence. On the lead single Beat Up Chanel$, she paints a picture of a chaotic lifestyle filled with excess, singing: “Money, drugs, chains on my chest, that vintage Celine / Diamond grills, champagne bottles, swagger I bleed.” It feels like a character study of someone chasing fast thrills while embracing their own destructive tendencies. “I want a cigarette,” she cries near the end, just before the song explodes into a rich mix of pounding electro house layered with warped synth textures. This is the world of Wor$t Girl In America, and she fully commits to the persona.
Showing how much she has transformed, Slayyyter moves far beyond the raw experimental energy of her self titled debut and the darker, retro inspired mood of Starfucker. On her third album she dives into the chaotic aesthetic of late 2000s indie sleaze, something she affectionately calls “iPod music.” Throughout the project she plays with exaggerated versions of American culture often seen in cult films she admires, from the chaotic outsiders of Spun to the troubled youth of Gummo and even the dangerous glamour of Faster Pussy Cat, Kill Kill!. That influence comes through clearly on Cannibalism, where eerie new wave sounds support a seductive chorus that shifts between emotional vulnerability and the bold presence of a dramatic film character.
At the core of the album’s wild and high energy sound sits Crank, a bold techno driven track packed with distorted industrial sounds and some of the most memorable lyrics on the project. Lines such as “She pick up then we fuck, I get so gay off that Tequila” and “He wanna fuck Slayyyter, Richard, we should link later” followed by a playful Matthew McConnaughey style impression, highlight her long standing talent for mixing humor, attitude, and provocation while staying true to the album’s rebellious energy.
The record closes with a tribute to the unforgettable Brittany Murphy, best known for her role in Jonas Akurland’s Spun, which Slayyyter has pointed to as an important creative influence. Representing a version of girlhood filled with chaos and emotional intensity, Murphy becomes a symbolic final character for the album’s closing moments. As the final track unfolds with dreamy psychedelic pop sounds, it feels like the emotional ending of a film, leaving the listener with the same lasting feeling that great movies often create.
