Eminem’s Publisher Accuses Meta of Copyright Infringement

Eminem’s publisher, Eight Mile Style, took legal action against Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta in May.

Eminem’s publishing company, Eight Mile Style, is preparing for what could become a major legal showdown with Meta. According to AllHipHop’s Grouchy Greg Watkins, the company recently filed new court documents claiming that the tech giant used the rapper’s catalog across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp without the proper licenses.

“Meta is one of the most valuable companies in the world… with teams of lawyers at the ready to crush any legitimate attempt at opposing many of the egregious tactics it employs in pursuit of its limitless expansion,” the filing states.

“Meta may effortlessly start and then endure a war of attrition in order to force a smaller opposing party into submission,” said Richard Busch, an attorney representing Eight Mile Style. “Meta objectively knew it did not have a license to exploit the Eight Mile compositions and was aware that it was providing infringing material on a massive scale, thereby culpably causing direct infringement by its users every time they copied, synched, downloaded, or streamed the Eight Mile compositions from its Music Libraries, which it deliberately placed there.”

Eight Mile Style initially filed suit against Meta earlier this year, accusing the company of copyright infringement. The complaint centers on the alleged unauthorized use of 243 compositions by Eminem, claiming the songs have appeared in millions of social media videos.

According to the lawsuit, Meta gained access to the music through a 2020 deal with the digital rights company Audiam, which reportedly did not have the authority to license the material.

“Meta’s years-long and ongoing infringement is another case of a trillion-dollar company exploiting the creative efforts of musical artists,” Eight Mile Style said in its filing. The company is seeking financial compensation and a permanent injunction to prevent Meta from using Eminem’s music without authorization in the future.
