Darryn Yates is a retro rock singer/songwriter with a fire inside him that is impossible to extinguish. He’s gone through life and continues to live it his way - but the motivation is different now. His newest single, a retro rock anthem titled “No Regrets Only Greatness” is a testament to him looking at how things were and using that to move forward into how things are.
Like Darryn’s own life, the song “No Regrets Only Greatness" has a storied history. The track was actually originally called “Metal Edge Magazine” and its subject matter was completely different. Darryn originally wrote the song while with his band On Tracy Lane.
“I went back in the archives of my songs for On Tracy Lane and found this one which had never been properly recorded. I liked the melodies and vibe of the song a lot so I just rewrote all the lyrics and transformed it into something that pushed my current message of inspiration and going after your dreams.” he said.
Darryn Yates classifies “No Regrets Only Greatness” as a retro rock song. The guitars in it are pure rock and roll with uplifting melodies that still pack a punch. Darryn’s songwriting pulses with passion because these words are his truth. He sings:
I gotta move all my thoughts to a growth mindset
I didn't come this far just to give up now
This mindset echoed throughout our conversation because Darryn believed he could overcome his situation. Now, he wants this song to be a vessel for others to do the same.
“When people hear this song, I want them to either get excited to hop on the train of what I’m doing or get excited for their dreams. Whatever dream or goal they have, they should go for it. When they hear my music, I want them to be motivated to see how far they can take whatever they’re after.” he said.
An artist growing and transforming across the years is the mark of a great artist. Whether the transformation is on the music or personal side, if an artist remains stagnant, they are doing something wrong. Darryn Yates transformed on both ends, changing his lifestyle and his music across the years.
“Everything we go through in our past serves a purpose. Whether something didn’t work out or failed, it’s all experience. It’s wisdom and it lays the foundation for you to move forward. You have to have an open mind, believe in every step and just lean into your authenticity.” he said.
When playing and touring with On Tracy Lane, Darryn Yates lived the fast life in every sense of the expression. From performing at places like The Roxy and The Troubadour, going overseas to perform, enlisting actress Lacey Chabert to be in an OTL music video, opening for several national acts, partying and still enjoying performing the music, things were going well for Darryn but he and the band truly never got the big break they wanted. By having all that, losing it then coming back to the music with a completely new outlook, it was a truly transformational journey.
“I think the good Lord decided He was gonna let me have all that, take it away, make me hit rock bottom and question life then come back with a story and purpose and have a theme to my music like never before.” he said.
For Darryn Yates, his motivation has expanded to not only being for his own internal self but for his wife and three children too. He wants his children to see that their Dad pushed himself to continue going down a path of motivation and happiness and didn’t give up when things got hard.
This passion for others is why he also started the Reveal Your Rockstar artist development program which he uses to instill the values he practices himself in others. He believes that if you have the knowledge and thought process to overcome something, you should share it with others so they can do the same.
“I promised myself I would help others like I was helped. None of the music I do now would have happened if mentors hadn’t helped me see life the way I see it now. Other people are gonna see the light in their lives and make killer music because of what I’ve done for them. Reveal Your Rockstar means just as much to me as my songs and message going as far as they can in the world.” he said.
Darryn’s positivity and passion reverberated throughout our entire conversation. He was just as excited about the new music he has coming up, including another positivity titled track “Swing for the Fences” which is scheduled to release October 31st.
The way Darryn Yates approaches music and life has continued to take him places where his uplifting persona and attitude is showcased to the twelfth power.
