John Beyer and Benjamin Hey! are a musical duo making waves with their genre-blending sound. Following the success of “I Love You More,” an infectious pop track that’s been gaining national radio airplay, they’re back with a new single, “Big Girl.” The song brings together raw rock emotion and theatrical flair, perfectly showcasing their versatile style.
The track opens with screaming electric guitars, immediately setting a dramatic tone as Beyer passionately declares, “You will always be my little girl!” His anguish is palpable as he sings over powerful rock drums:
Little girl with auburn hair
Gave you the world but you just don’t care
…
Thought our bond would never break
Did I make a huge mistake?
This intense father-daughter drama is one that many can relate to. The story behind “Big Girl” is deeply personal for Beyer, who shared that the song was inspired by a tense moment with his daughter. “I literally shredded the door with my bare hands during an argument,” he recalls. This chaotic incident sparked the idea for a song about generational conflict—a deeply personal story that grew into an anthem of father-daughter tension, balancing vulnerability and defiance.
Known as “The Captain,” Hey! is a prolific songwriter. He turned Beyer’s raw inspiration into a fully realized musical narrative. “It has to be two perspectives,” says Hey!, emphasizing the importance of capturing emotional complexity from both sides. To bring the daughter’s perspective to life, they recruited Broadway actress and singer Mia Gentile, whose vocal and acting talent brought the role to life perfectly. The convincing father-daughter chemistry of Beyer and Gentile is on full display in the music video Hey! directed.
Produced by Arthur Pingrey, known for his work with Sia and Sting, “Big Girl” fuses '80s hard rock with modern sensibilities. The track’s arrangement mirrors its emotional depth, blending dramatic storytelling with an infectious melody.
Beyer and Hey! describe their sound as “Drama Pop,” a genre that mixes pop, rock, and theatrical elements. “Anyone who loves storytelling in music and wants something with visual impact will connect with this song,” Hey! says. The accompanying video enhances the song’s storytelling, showcasing intense performances that bring its emotional core to life.
Beyer, who began his musical journey later in life, started writing seriously just six years ago when he penned a song for his daughter’s wedding. Since then, he and Hey! have collaborated on over 30 songs, creating a diverse body of work that spans R&B, light hip-hop, and rock. “When I met Ben, we clicked,” says Beyer. “We have a lot of cross-genre influence.”
Looking ahead, Beyer and Hey! will soon release a new single, “YOLO, FOMO, MOFO,” a duet exploring life’s urgency and the pursuit of dreams. And Beyer has plans to produce a musical drama about recovering from addiction. United by their shared vision to create music that moves people, Beyer and Hey! are eager to continue crafting songs that evoke emotion.
With “Big Girl,” Beyer and Hey! are continuing their musical evolution, blending theatricality, personal storytelling, and diverse genres into a sound that’s uniquely their own. Listeners should get ready: this musical drama really pops.
