When two brilliant hip-hop talents out of California teamed up to release a hot summer track, they had no idea how well it would reflect a friendship that would then flourish in their music careers.
The creation of the single, “What You Came For,” fit a perfect summer vibe from artists KingJu1c3 and AcWolf — together called AstroBlack — but it also depicts their instant friendship that started 15 years ago. The two had lived very different lives until their happenstance meeting.
“It was crazy,” AcWolf said with a laugh. “We were talking to the same girl.”
“She had this idea to go to Santa Barabara, and I was the driver,” KingJu1c3 said, “four or five people in this car, and I only knew the girl. What’s funny is we don’t even talk to this girl anymore, and we became best friends.”
“That was one of the best weekends of my life,” AcWolf added. “It was straight vibe — no tolerance for whoever wasn’t on our wavelength.”
The connection remained strong even though life guided them separate ways for a while. AcWolf overcame adversities of gang activity and projected himself into a better life in the music industry. KingJu1c3 had served three years in the U.S. Marine Corps and was anticipating a future in education.
The global pandemic paused everything, but eventually both artists were able to devote themselves individually to their music. Last year, they joined forces to release the single “Massi” and that same spark of joy and creativity returned.
“He’s the moon and I’m the sun,” KingJu1c3 said. “We project our own kind of light but we work together with incredible flow.”
Knowing this kind of collaboration is unique, AstroBlack is hitting the ground running, ready to produce its first EP later this summer. The project is called Watch Close, because this music has a lot to offer and you won’t want to miss it.
“Like a magician, you’ll have to watch close to see what happens,” KingJu1c3 said. “There’s anticipation. We love that feeling.”
AcWolf considers this next project to be unlike anything he’s accomplished so far in his career.
“It feels more authentic — more real — rocking the stage with Ju1c3,” he said. “Our creation process is a light, amazing experience. There’s transparency, uplifting, vibe — and it’s just hitting people’s ears. We’re literally just getting started. There’s so much to come.”
While AstroBlack will be the name to keep an eye on in the world of hip-hop, stay in tune with the artists’ individual creations in the future. On top of music, KingJu1c3 is working on a book titled Manhood 2.0: The Playbook to Adulting in the 21st Century and a communications program.
“You know that joker in a deck of cards that’s juggling everything? That’s me, working on being a king,” he said. “In whatever I do, I give it my all. And I serve the people I lead.”
Make sure to stay connected to AstroBlack, KngJu1c3 and AcWolf on all platforms for new music, videos, and social posts.
