Sydney B takes advantage of her gift to help others

Seventeen-year-old Sydney B is a normal teenager with normal teenager problems.

But she’s also a classically trained singer with a big voice that people are fast noticing. And when her producer asked what she wanted to write about, she thought hard about it and then decided.

“Basically I took my insecurities and anxieties and the other things I struggle with as a teenager, just normal people problems in general, and I went off of that,” she says.

The result is her standout single “Beautiful,” which she calls a story about a girl who is finding herself and her purpose in the world. It’s both Sydney B–and anybody listening–and a reminder that insecurities can make you stronger.

Spread my wings, watch me soar
Kicking open every door
And now I’m the talk of the town

Sydney B started singing when she was 9-years-old in her elementary choir. She’s since trained in choral singing and has been a longtime participant in musical theater; in the last few years she’s started singing opera, as well. Her background comes through in her music, and it gives her voice some unique characteristics.

“Because I come from a choral background, my voice didn’t have a lot of flavor or solo qualities in it but my producer has helped me work on it over time,” she says. “You still hear it in a lot of my music. If you know I’m classically trained you can hear it. I like that in a sense because all pop singers have different kinds of voices and styles and so I like that mine comes from a classical background because using it in a pop sense is not something you see a lot.”

She’s always wanted to be a professional singer, but never knew she’d get the opportunity to actually follow that dream. But now that she’s getting that chance, she wants to use it to benefit more than herself.

“Since I was given a gift, I want to use it for good,” she says. “I don’t think that idea was planted in me by someone else. I think that’s just my innate reaction when I’m given something. I want to use it and give to others. Because I was given this voice and this opportunity, I don’t want to take it for granted and I want to use it for something good.”

Her main goal is to spread a message of positivity and hopefulness, while letting others know she’s not any different.

“I try to make it uplifting but sometimes that’s not what I’m feeling and it’s hard to write about something you’re not feeling,” she says. “I’ve got a couple songs that haven’t been released and they’ve got a different message, but something that’s still relevant in people’s lives. One talks about the stresses and worries that come with life and it’s not exactly a positive view but it’s a relationship and connection between me and the people listening. Everybody gets busy and stressed.”

Sydney B has stockpiled unreleased music and is planning to release new tunes in bunches, about six at a time, beginning this year. The new tracks will showcase the diversity in her music, with different messages and styles.
