Rapper Kupid Packs an Energetic Punch with New Single, “OK Wait”

Rapper and producer Andrew “Drew” Carnakie-Baker—otherwise known as “Kupid”—drops his latest single, “OK Wait.”

From Georgia to New York, Kupid is building his sound on the places he’s lived and experienced. His music demonstrates a hint of “South meets North,” making it appealing to fans up and down the East Coast.

His high-energy single can best be described as eccentric, fly. Kupid hopes listeners get wrapped up in his single. “I want listeners to feel extreme energy while working out,” says Kupid of the new song. “I want them to get wrapped up in my single. I want them to feel like, ‘You’re the man, you’re the woman, you’re whoever you feel like.’ That’s what I want listeners to get from my first track. I want to show my skills as well.”

Kupid’s inspirations include his life experiences and navigating through college. “My music is about the air I’m in right now,” adds the rapper. “It’s mainly about coming to New Orleans. Coming for the crown. And everyone is tight with it.”

“OK Wait” was the result of a homework assignment that became larger than life. “I started rapping in college, my freshman year,” explains Kupid. “I went to New Orleans to produce and fell in love with it. One assignment was to make tracks and turn it into a song. My friend was like, ‘yo, hop on this beat real quick.’ He thought for a first time rapping it was really good. Then he produced it into ‘OK Wait.’ It was an assignment song that ended up blossoming into a single.”

When it comes to writing music, Kupid has a tried-and-true process. “I like listening to other popping artists right now in the underground scene. Whatever inspires me when it comes to certain beats / sonics—I’ll take that to my producer to get inspired for the beat creation process. Then, when it comes to lyric making and song writing, my art comes through life. I have to experience life first, before putting it into tangible form. I’m also a big pop culture reference fan. Fashion references are in my music as well. I’m also an Anime head. That’s my songwriting process.”

Kupid stepped into the hip-hop scene in 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic. At the time, the rapper was a freshman at Loyola University in New Orleans. Kupid went to college to focus on Music Production; halfway there, he shifted to Music Industry Studies to invest in his own development as an artist. While he didn’t launch his career until his early 20s, Kupid developed his passion for music at an early age.

From the age of four, Kupid was drawn to the acoustic guitar and keyboard. Once he felt comfortable with those two, he went on to learn additional instruments. By middle school, the young artist was playing electric guitar at home and a full drum set at school. In high school, he joined the drumline and found his love for rap music.

When he began releasing music, Kupid was known as “Drew$kii.” His first EP under that moniker, Ultraviolet, was a collaboration with other artists and released in 2021.

So how did Andrew become “Kupid”? “It’s basically what I call myself,” explains the artist. “First and foremost, I’m constantly showing love to the point of where I’ve had people say, ‘you’re the most respectful person I’ve met.’ It’s also because of my fashion references. My whole motto and saying is fly shit. ‘Fly as fuck’.” The other part is that it comes with being like Cupid. I wanted to give fans a name they’ve already heard before.”

For Kupid, music runs in the family—literally. Working alongside his cousin, Jlav, Kupid plans to release another EP. In 2024, he plans to follow up with a full-length project. As for performances, the rapper looks forward to bringing his act to the main stage across his favorite cities—New Orleans, Atlanta, and New York—in the future.
