Through driving beats complete with Caribbean undertones and rhythms, London-based drag queen and singer/songwriter Paris King has released a new track called “Jealousy” that is sure to get the blood pumping, while boasting her lifestyle unapologetically.
“When I talk about jealousy, it is really about the nay-sayers and the hecklers, and the people who are trying to tell you not to do this and not to do that,” Paris King said. “Oftentimes it is not from a place of love and the reason why is that they are jealous that you’ve got the chutzpah or the get up and go to try something that is on the other side of the norm.”
Paris King is a drag queen singer, songwriter and performer, who is half Celtic and half Jamaican, hence the Caribbean influence that exudes in her her latest tune. She will rap and even roar her vocals, setting a powerful tone both musically and lyrically. Paris called “Jealousy” a huge song for her personally, as it is all about empowerment.
Paris King added, “If you can’t deal with it, you’re jealous.”
Paris especially wanted to incorporate the music that she listened as a child.
“I’ve just always been interested in music,” Paris explained. “It is something I’ve always loved. It’s actually in my bones. My father used to produce reggae music and on my mother’s side, grandparents and distant cousins are all singers. So it has always kind of been in my blood.”
It was important to represent the Caribbean culture, as well as representing the queer people of colors, and allies, which are all depicted in the song’s music video that can be found on YouTube.
“The color scheme is red, gold and green, and the reason for that is that I wanted it to be as authentic to the Caribbean culture as possible,” said Paris, who is wearing these colors in the music video. “It’s a fun video that is ultimately a performance piece. There is a lot of dancing and a lot of glamour.”
The track is described in Paris’s biography as a “no-holds-barred anthem for owning all of who you are, haters be damned.” Paris’s biography says “King makes it clear that she’s not here to be anyone but her entire, unapologetic self.”
Paris King wrote all of the lyrics and said that they flowed perfectly. Once she started listening to the beats created by OGE Beats, it all came naturally coming straight from the heart.
“I loved it,” said Paris. “It was kind of semi-autobiographical.”
The story of Paris King goes back to attending the legendary London nightclub, Heaven, where there was an advertisement for a drag audition. Paris decided for it and ended up getting the gig, and the rest is history.
Paris explained that her world of music has taken gradual steps, with lyric writing starting around 2011. This is something she has always toyed with, but Paris said the real recording aspect started about 14 years ago. Since then Paris has released a variety of powerful tracks, working with top producers and talents like Damon Elliott and Heather Bright for a previous track called “Movie Star” that was released in June.
Paris King said she is extremely proud of “Jealousy” and that moving forward there is plenty of music to come. She plans to promote the tune extensively while also building a solid fanbase, and enhancing the music catalogue. While Paris has been making music and filming videos, there are still performances in London set in the future, as well. Other tracks are in the pipeline, as well, with one in the works called “Never Going to Get You Back” with a release date that has not yet been set.
“Jealousy” and the rest of the Paris King music catalogue can be found on all major platforms including:
