ATLANTA, Ga. — Will Preston’s latest single delves into the breakup part of a relationship in a diversion from the sentiments shared by most love songs, but it’s a side of love that many people can relate to.
The new single ‘Of Course I Lied,’ tells the story of an uncomfortable part of a relationship that most people don’t want to talk about, but sometimes it comes up anyway.
“I have a lot of people who work with me in promoting and one of the things was a great number of your fans are females and you’re known as this ballad guy and love guy and what are they going to think?” Preston said. “Just to be honest with you, I have received so many messages from people saying I've been in that situation or they know people who have been in that situation. I think that people really recognize it as a point in time that happens from time to time in relationships. The thought is not to dwell in it, you move on to happier times in love but I paused to acknowledge the moment.”
The single dives into that uncomfortable conversation that sometimes happens and sometimes doesn’t at the end of a relationship, the question of why.
“‘Of Course I Lied’ is a story of unrequited love, offering listeners an inside view of an uncomfortable and seemingly tumultuous end,” Preston said. “It’s filled with unbridled emotion and is unapologetically soulful. Of Course I Lied is the lead single from Will’s upcoming project due later this year.”
Preston has been a musical artist for almost 20 years and he’s seen change in the industry over that time
From watching magazines to waiting until Tuesday when new albums and cassettes and CDs typically came out before the age of digital and social media, Preston has seen the music industry become a market where everyone wants something new now.
“The way we consumed music today is so different, and I don’t consider myself to be that old, but sometimes when you think about the changes that have taken place in such a short period of time it kind of dates you and it really makes you feel old,” Preston said. “I remember when I released my first project there was no instagram, there was no Twitter, so this whole social media aspect was not a part of the dynamic at all, that was not part of the equation. We were at that point in time, I remember having licensing deals and distribution deals where we were shipping out products. I was shipping out boxes of CDs to China and to New York and they were selling them in independent record stores and we got on in some of the Tower Record stores and most of those places don’t even exist anymore.”
“Of Course I Lied” is the first song released from what will become a full album to be released in late September or early October.
He said the song has resonated with a big crowd
“It pulls on a different emotional string and it’s one of those things that we don’t want to celebrate,” he said. “So the song is not written to celebrate but really to share that story as well because it’s also a very real component of love. Maybe not for everyone but for a lot of people.”
