Dr. Jefferey P. Kee is known as “The Pastor for the Master” and he serves as senior pastor of New Faith Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio. He’s been there for 30 years.
And, as a songwriter, producer and bass guitarist, Kee has discovered that music is an especially effective way to deliver a message.
“My heart is for the world and my heart is about giving a message through music that will help to heal a soul, to unite someone with a greater sense of love, to lift up someone who’s burdened and to encourage someone who’s distressed and disheartened,” Kee says. “I want to let them know that things will get better. Today is the tomorrow that we worried about yesterday.”
“Your sparkle will come,” he says.
Now everyone can get a sense of that “sparkle” with the release of Kee’s new single, the slow jam “Sparkle Like 24k Gold.”
It’s an old-school R&B song that was inspired by his own family. Kee’s cousin had long expressed his desire for Kee to officiate his wedding “when he found the right one.” Eventually he called with the good news: Kee was needed to perform the destination wedding nuptials.
“From listening to his love language, I started hearing love music and from the emotions that I know most of us have experienced, want to experience or will experience, ‘Sparkle Like 24k Gold’ birthed inside of me and I called him back and said I will be coming to perform the wedding celebration but I also will be coming with a song that I have written for you.”
When the day arrived, Kee played his new song and left the audience in awe – he even had requests to play the song when others renewed their vows.
Kee calls the track a composition of emotions and messages from the heart that sometimes can’t be spoken with words. Sometimes words alone can’t express the level of frustration or exhilaration a person is experiencing, he says.
“And you find yourself in a place where a different language speaks to you and that language is called a song,” he says. “So this song is a love song of maybe what someone wants to say in words but can’t quite express. That song becomes the messenger.”
Kee is no stranger to music. He’s released previous projects called Now’s the Time and Weapons of Warfare, but right now he’s focused on releasing singles ahead of his next album. He’s got the music finished for six more and plans to release the whole album by next spring.
The project will be a composition of contemporary gospel music, love and worship songs and some with that old school R&B feel. He wants to capture the moods and emotions that move people in a positive direction while also speaking to whatever his listeners are dealing with at a particular time.
Music has been a family affair, as well. Kee’s cousin, John P. Kee, is known as “The Prince of Gospel Music” and was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame.
“It’s said that every Black church in America does a John P. Kee song,” he says.
He has another cousin who’s married to Ron Isley of The Isley Brothers fame. She and her sister both sing on a national level.
“We have a great adoration for people and we try to share that through music,” Kee says. “We try to create a greater sense of humanity for all of us to love each other and one of the vehicles for doing that is music that is sincere and genuine and has a message that brings hope.”
Kee earned an undergraduate degree in political science, a master’s of theological studies, a master’s of divinity and a doctorate of ministry from United Theological School. He graduated as a Welborn/Thomas Fellow preaching for social change.
