From Ohio Plumber to California Shelter to Singer, Artist

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Dez Mac is using the trials of his life and his passion for music to try to lift others and inspire them to follow their dreams.

Mac left his job as a plumber and moved from his home in Youngtown, Ohio, to San Francisco to take a shot at his dream of becoming a musician.

He’s building a name for himself in the City by the Bay and he wants to show others that they can follow their dreams as well.

“Just coming from Youngstown, Ohio, in that area you see a lot of talented people in all realms,” Dez Mac said. “I’m talking boxing, basketball, football, everything. Even one of my classmates was a professional hockey player when he was in school. It’s crazy, there’s so much talent there but there isn’t a lot of opportunity. Some people make it out, a few people make it big. I’m just trying to show people, hey man, I was just like you, I, just literally on a plumbing job, said I’m going to move, I’m just going to do it.”

Mac said he didn’t sing or do music much at home because he was afraid of failure in front of people he knew, but now his music is an inspiration to people back home.

“Before I left Ohio, I did no music,” Mac said. “I always wrote music but I was afraid to actually do music there, I didn’t know, man if someone didn’t like this I would feel crushed because this is something I really love to do. I had to move and if they don’t like it in San Francisco, who cares. They don’t know me, I don’t know them. Now my music is inspiring a lot of people back home in whatever realm they’re in.”

Dez Mac said he was proud when the Atlanta producer Zaytoven performed the introduction to Mac’s song, “Passoion.”

“The song ‘Passion’ with Zaytoven in the intro, he’s basically stamping me as an artist in the music game, giving me a huge shoutout in my hometown as well,” Dez Mac said. “That song is literally about me moving out here to really pursue something that I love and to show people like, hey, I know this sounds crazy, but I’m going to actually pursue music.”

He said his recent release, “Stay TRU,” is another ballad that’s meant to inspire.

“That song is literally like in the title, stay true to yourself,” Mac said. “It also talks about how I give my all when I'm in the booth and dealing with things like years ago, dealing with depression and things of this nature. It’s all about stay true to yourself and genuine to yourself.”

He’s working with DJ Fresh on some new releases and he was featured on Bow Wow’s mixtape. He also recently toured independently and performed two shows in Las Vegas and two shows in Atlanta.

He released his latest single, “Know About It,” in October. Inspired by the gun violence and police brutality of recent years, the song explores a number of social ills and challenges listeners to do something about the wrongs they see around them.

Mac said he’s got some big events planned for the next few weeks and months, although he can’t talk much about the details. In the meantime he plans to continue to promote the music he’s already released.
